I'm planning on building a pair of speakers with the B&G Neo8 ribbon and noticed the Peerless 8" HDS, which looks quite attractive, especially considering the price. In the forum's archive I didn't find much talk about this driver. Maybe someone has used it and could share some comments?

Haven't used it. However, I would point out that Siegfried Linkwitz, (of Linkwitz-Riley crossovers), rated a slightly smaller HDS line speaker in a comparison with some of the best drivers on the market for his Phoenix speaker.

The slightly smaller Peerless 850439 rated as the best for price vs. performance.

Presumably, similar quality could be expected throughout the HDS line.

Also, all Peerless HDS line speakers have an aluminum shorting ring in the magnet structure. This makes the magnetic field symmetrical and cuts down enormously on distortion in the bass region, especially when using it in a ported box. Without that symmetrical magnetic field, some speakers actually move to the extreme of their travel near the ported box resonance and clip off half the waveform! The aluminum shorting ring prevents this. (Some manufacturers use an extended pole piece to accomplish the same thing).

The aluminum shorting ring has the advantage over the extended pole piece of giving better midrange performance, in the opinion of many.

While I cannot say for sure because I have not used this specific model, I will say that these features would appear to make the Peerless HDS line a good choice. I have also used other Peerless woofers and have been well satisfied with the results.
