I don't understand what the difference between the two is. Can you explain?

The PecanPI streamer is fully assembled and ready to go with the software installed.
The DAC you need to assemble and install software on your own.

So you charge $175 for assembly of the very easy kit + free software? That's almost 80% of the kit price. Wow.
I remember the first time I set up a Pi it took me days of heartache and wasted time.
The price for the dac is pcb only, the streamer includes all the other bits and the case and seems to represent fine value.

No the kit costs $350.
$225 is just for the DAC, the case adds another $125. Assembly and installation of software ends up being $50. I cannot charge any less than that considering how much time in involved.
I have had multiple questions regarding volume control on the unit.
The volume control can be either through the knob on the unit or through software when you control the device remotely.
The HW volume control on the unit (knob) will be better than to the SW one. Both will sound great.

Working with Asus to get Tinkerboard support.
We are very close and Tinkerboard will be supported before product ships.

First review / writeup on the PecanPi:
Orchard Audio ApplePi and PecanPi - RaspberryPi DACs - DAC - Digital to Analog Conversion - Audiophile Style
Some quotes from the writeup:
"I know very well how the SBT and AudioEngine 5+ powered speakers sound, but even as I was being somewhat distracted by enabling this new RPi endpoint in Roon, my focus was immediately drawn to the music when I started up Jean Michel Jarre’s latest “Equinoxe Infinity” (via Tidal). It’s a new reference recording, and I immediately noticed a significant sound quality improvement. Granted the SBT is probably a better streamer than DAC, but holy cow! The stereo imaging on Flying Totems (Movement 2) was outstanding, and the bass much, much tighter. Everything was just better."
"Thebass is huge and the imaging is precise. Way better than Ithought possible. I even forgot about wanting to add a subwoofer. My wife even commented on how great it sounded and wants me to now set up something at her office. What just happened?!?"

The PecanPi DAC has digital HW volume control. It is only available by using the POT.

Thanks again
No mute pin?
The mute is taken care of internally either when the BUS has zero (0) data on it or when the bus is down.
I realized that you can use the PecanPi DAC or Streamer to bi-amp speakers because the XLR and RCA outputs can be used at the same time.
