As of the date of the columns, 10.5.7 was way out of date. An update to 10.5.8 is suggested. Snow Leopard is highly recommended as long as your Ap set works in it.
Bob seems to be having typical problems when a Windows user switches. Looking for the hard way to do things.
I don't use Mail so can't comment on the detail. In Eudora to save a draft i go Save (command-S) and it is saved in my Out box.
For viewing PDFs i advise changing the default pdf reader to preview (commands for zoom may well be different depending on whether you use Acrobat or Preview to view pdfs in browser). If i want to seriously read a PDF, i command clik and select the menu item, open in Preview which has way better control than in the browser.
What Bob needs is to sit down with someone familiar with the Mac and just start asking questions. I bet that after an hour with me, his brains would start to be leaking.

I have to agree with planet10 on Snow Leopard as it is better than Leopard. Apps can be a problem but as it's a new computer he's referring to, they should be quite new. I've experienced some Apple 2008 apps not working under Snow Leopard but there are usually patches available to sort it out.
OS upgrades can be hard enough and platform changes can be a nightmare as we get so used to how we work. We just have to pick what is close to suiting us and get on with it. Even going from XP to Win7 can be no joy.
No matter what the marketing blurb is from Apple or Microsoft, making the OS software so called easier is actually burying more functions deeper in the OS and you have to dig around to find it or find out how to do it or change it to suit. With each new release, the User Manual (now called getting started) gets smaller as does the local machine online help where more is being provided via the internet. I can understand why a paper User Manual is no longer provided but supplied as a concise User Manual in PDF would not be too hard, or would it? I do miss the good old concise paper manuals of years past.

As a Linux user, I can proudly say I have no problems with backwards compatibility. Heck, with the right plugin, I can run software written for System/360....in 1964.
Anyone still have their punch cards? 🙂

Bob does not know when to give up. He threw a terminal off of the roof at National. The man vs. computer stuff is quaint now and tiresome.

Technical documentation is always stale, and complaining about it doesn't make it better. Almost all of the complaints are a function of an inflexible mind and blaming shortcomings on others. A friend's dad is 83 and wants to use email. He has gone to community education classes, multiple times. He has been tutored personally by several people. He gets it and then forgets it. He buys a mac on impulse along with multiple large print books. Still doesn't get it.
