pearl Phono stage battery option

I just got a set of pcb's for the pearl phono stage. On them is printed a couple of attachments for an optional 9v battery? Does anyone know any thing about this option? does it power the whole thing or just one of the stage?
Battery power is intriging, i'd love to try it and compare,
