Let me know of this is the wrong place - I looked around but didn't see much.
I have a bugle 2 and like it. I also have an unfinished passdiy Pearl from 10 years ago. I'm looking for your thoughts - Will I get an audible/significant improvement, or is it a lateral move?
Just looking for opinions before sinking time and money into it.
Either way, it'll be hooked up to a hagerman piccolo step up and a denon 103r on a vpi hw19 Mk iv.
Thanks

I have them both, and like them both very much.
Finish the Pearl. Trust me. 🙂

You should have finished it. I'm still using mine after all these years, with a Piccolo too.🙂

Pearl vs Bugle
I built both. The Pearl is much, much better.
The Bugle gave only a slight improvement over the built-in phono stage on my Amplifier (Musical Fidelity A308); the Pearl clearly better. Black background, big dynamics.

Hi,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Pearl is decent output
MC only in reality, whist the Bugle2 is MM or MC.
I don't see the Pearl needing any additional step up.
rgds, sreten.

The original Pearl is MM only, but a piggy back card was developed based on the Ono, and heavily described here.
I think Pearl-II is medium MC capable....??

PEARL II
"The overall gain of the circuit as shown is 55 dB @ 1K Hz. Decreasing R14 from 1K to 300 Ohms gives 10 dB more gain when desired for lower output cartridges."

His parts and boards are for the original Pearl, which is about 38dB. The step-up will be necessary with the cartridge that will be used.
Build the Pearl. 🙂

55 db of gain. Even with adjusting for 65 db of gain, it wasn't quite enough for Denon 103R with .25mV. .25mV is probably on the lower end.
I've read that a Pearl II and a SUT is a gorgeous combination.

Was this with a line stage preamp with gain, or a unity buffer preamp?
OK, you've convinced me. Thank you for the input. I'll try to sell the bugle 2 to fund a chassis and any parts I'm missing. Maybe I can do that while kick starting my aleph j build 🙂
I've been using a Pearl II stage with 55db gain setting and a 0.8 mV cart. That gives around 450 mV output and with a unity gain buffer preamp, 40W amp and 89.5 dB was quite enough in my biggish room.
103R and 65 dB would give an approximate same output voltage. So, it must be all system dependent. I've heard that the output on some 103R Denons is bigger than stated in specs. >0.3mV
