PCM58- and Alternatives

I did a quick listening session like I did with resistor I/V

wouldn't it be nice to bypass the many resistors and opamps and capacitors in the signal?

Again it is only a mirror of illusions, such is NOS, passive I/V and first order/simple filters without opamps.

I know exactly how my dac sounds.

Bypassing the filter opamp, only using first order filter and relying on my amp filter here is some grand ensemble chorale + orchestra + organ how the sound appeared to me I took notes of what struck my ears :

  • much highs
  • voices were somewhat caricaturized
  • very explosive
  • trumpets dominated the scene
  • sounds clear
  • somewhat textured sound
  • Bass OK, but in retreat
  • on second track I noticed a lot the bows hitting the cellos strings

Then I reinstalled the filter and here is my review:

  • sounds balanced, flutes re-appeared playing in duet with the trumpets, they were eclipsed before
  • I can hear the whole registers of voices (bass, baritone, alto, soprano, tenor)
  • Good timing
  • Complex
  • Textures are incredible
  • very equilibrated sound
  • second track: I can hear each instrument, and the ambiance is there.

%%% = it is obvious that there is something charming, and striking without the filter, but you miss a lot by using it and what you gain is not worth it. Same apply to NOS, resistor I/V.

Do not get discouraged with the square method of adjusting 4 trim pots, it is the only way... It is very easy to see how to adjust the 3, 4 bits , then 2nd is harder to adjust, then MSB.

%%% the icing on the 'dac' is a nice big heatsink with thermal paste, this improves the sound, as the Dac runs cooler and has a big surface to dissipate the heat it is more stable and the head doesn't go so much into the PCM.

Second board, I was able to adjust the 4 bits better than on the pictures, don’t get discouraged.

A whole week of work there, new socket for filter, 16 hiQ np NX .47uf 50v , 4 extra bit trimpots , new input and output schematic, new power caps and new power schematic for dac ic, gold rca, classD regulator -12v , special pre-reg for digital , external 5v reg,

Start from empty board next time!!!!
