I just put together a homebrew PCM2902 circuit with an independant power supply and everything SEEMS to be OK.
The PCB, I know has been triple checked.
I'm using Windows 98SE and the device is detected but will not install....."unknown device".
What is the driver I need for this?... and I'll just manually install it.
I also ran across something that said the .INF file needs to be edited to work?

sounds like you have a USB driver issue. Do you have anyother USB devices?
Anyways, from what i remember about when i had 98 on my machine and USB was relatively new I had to add some patches to get the USB port to work.

Also depending on the speed of the computer you may want to look into upgrading to windows 2000. I say windows 2000 and not any other becuase windows 2000 runs well on even a older pentium machine and is much more reliable and less fritzy than 98 is. IMHO 98 is a terrible operating system with all the blue screens of deaths and freezes. Win 2000 has no real issues with these. But then again i wouldnt blame you if you didnt want to go through the hassle of a new OS much less the astronomical cost of one.

I'm going to test it on a Windows 200o machine but I want to just assume that all is OK.
I have a couple of USB devices that work fine and it does detect the DAC borad....just gives me an unknown device but....
back to my original question,
which driver file is needed (besides usb.sys) to get this thing working??

By the way, thanks for that link Benjlv...there's some info about a streaming class driver and some other info I need to take a look at.
I think Win 98 is out to lunch for USB devices for the most part anyway.
I see there's a USB evaluation utility......gotta check that out.

possibly i suppose. Although im under the impression that both can work in unison. Someone else whos made one would know better than me though.
I personally would try the device on the win 2000 machine. I think its just that the standard for USB sound was not out yet when 98 was realeased. So i would try the win2000 machine...and then look for some drivers for a win98 machine.

The pcm2902 will work with the sound card installed. I have had the same issues and not much luck. The first time I tried the board I got sound for up to 30seconds and then it would die.
I just tried built my pcm2902 again only for the purpose of digital output, i did a much better job soldering and putting it together this time and nothing. (same error as you)
note: I tried win98se and win xp, when it worked both worked and overrode the internal soundcard

I have had same kind of problems: sometimes the chip does not start properly when PC is powered up or when USB cable is connected. But my cards usually work, just sometimes the problem appears.
Connecting ground with zero ohm link makes booting reliable for me, but it causes some PC ground current noise. With 10 ohm isolation resistor sound is noise free, but booting not reliable.
It has probably something to do with the things that quickly happen when USB device is detected.
There are some hardware devices for testing USB interface, but they are rather expesive i guess. Also sotware debugger might help, but i'm not aware of free USB test software...
