You can't really debug the board without a scope, unfortunately. See if you can borrow one, or locate someone in your area with one that doesn't mind you using their 'lab' in exchange for a beer or two.rjkdivin said:

That was a problem alright....the ISP frequency on the 'board tab' was defaulting to 1MHz when I would leave that tab, and the signature did not match the selected device on the advanced tab. I reset the ISP frequency to 5.875khz (if I recall correctly), programmed it in, then everything else programmed and verified perfectly after that. So the Atmega8 seems to be functioning properly now.
Unfortunately I am still getting no sound except a small thump at power on and power off, so I must have another fault of some kind that I have not found. Are there signal test points along the signal path that I could safely sample to see how far it is going? I have a Fluke 187 true rms meter.

When you get a scope, check in order...
- valid 29MHz clock out of SMT oscillator
- valid clock/data/FS out of AD1986 and going into PCM1792
- some signal at the SPDIF and Toslink outputs
- clock at RMCK pin of CS8416; you should get 256Fs or 512Fs (can't remember exactly which)
- valid clock/data/FS out of CS8416

As far as I know, there are no more PCBs left from the group buy that was organized by Geek, and I believe I got the only extra that Gary Marsh had.
No one has expressed an interest in another group buy so far, but I can say that with two working units, the Marsh HD-1 performes very well.

If we're going to do another run of boards, I'll need 25 interested (they're done in minimum and increments of 25).
Cost: $27.50 USD/board
Shipping: Canada Post will be upping rates mid January. I can't say for sure. Last time they were $7.30 or $14.05 overseas (depending on destination and qty of boards. They are HEAVY) for Small Packet Air. Lettermail to the USA isn't an option anymore, due to recent changes. Rates are $5.95/$7.90/$12.25 (board qty dependent) for all US states and dependencies. Canada can vary drastically by postal code, especially to Ontario.
Again, these are changing mid-January, so the prices are a guide.
Payment will be accepted via PayPal or hyperWALLET only. It was a mess last time with M.O.'s arriving a week after the order was sent or incorrectly filled out.
Please don't send anything unless we get the required interest and I come with the collection plate 😉

To help things along, I'm happy to double my committment up to 4 boards. I would also support the suggested revisions for the power LED and the Optical Out, but I would like to hear Gary's take on them first to be sure he didn't see any pitfalls.

Hello, I was just wondering if someone could take a quick look at this simple BOM I made for some parts at digi-key. Is the components from the file "HPA PRICING.xls" still valid?
A question:
In "HPA PRICING.xls" it says "P12412-ND" = 330uF/35V 10mm/5.0mm but "P12412-ND" is 220uF/35V 8mm/3.5mm

Well, for the capacitors with 5mm lead spacing may be one could use
the 565-1693-ND (EKZE350ELL331MJ16S) made by Nippon Chemicon
since the P12413-ND seem currently sold out at Digikey.
Or a couple extra holes could be put in place so one could fit 3.5mm
and 5mm spaced caps. So if one prefers to use the Panasonic low
profile caps.
May be it is time to clean up the PL. There is still a 49 MHz crystal called
for while Gary mentioned it is to be changed to a 29.4912 MHz.
