PC speaker upgrade from plastic to wood

Hello everyone,how's the listening?
Can I ask, I find myself listening to my PC more than my HiFi at the mo.New amp is on the backburner for a while, so my attention is drawn to my cheapish PC speakers. I have a pair of Altec Lansing 220 speakers. I didn't buy the matching sub, becuase I didn't want another box and more cable. How much effort is it worth, to take these speakers and re-build a pair of cabs out of wood rather than the manufactured plastic cases they come in? Would it sound more natural in wood?
I was thinking about using the same volume and port dimensions as the original cab, and still mount the electronics in the cabs. Also one cab contains the power supply and the other the amp. Would I gain from screening the transformer? What could I use here?, and could hifi loudspeaker cable(OFC-for instance)make much difference?
I'm curious too, the port tube is mounted at the rear of the cab, so could this be improved upon, by either having it front firing, or down to the floor/up to the ceiling? Reason being, my PC speakers are wall mounted and I want to use the same brackets to mount the new cabs, and the port at the mo, sits appx 10mm in front of the wall face.
Has anyone done anything similar?
Cheers. Mikee55🙂

Hi,

I'd simply well stuff them with BAF or similar away from area
around the port, extend the port length if there is enough
internal room and then leave well alone.

IMO the effort you describe will simply not be worth it.

Inspecting the drivers is a good idea, it may be they can be
upgraded if they are cheap and nasty to something better.

Ah well...

...Yep thats them, so I'm needing complete repacement? Thought so. Better get tablesaw out then🙂

I've got a pair of Audax 6" fibreglass drivers with rubber surround. Guess they'll do? Are you familiar with them? Can't remember their model no. Maplin(UK) is where I bought them. If I remember right, they were listed in Winlsd. Just Googled model number HP 170 F0 from the french website. Can someone give me an optimised box volume.I dont need spl, I will use the Altec L. amplifier for now. And my soundcard is Creative Soundblaster Live 24bit. So I'll need a tweeter, what one could I use thats cheap, because I have other projects on the go and I want to build these quick, hence why I asked for a box. I do'nt want to install Winlsd, because the PC's been playing up. Your help is gratefully appreciated.

Cheers Y'all.Mikee55🙂

Hi,

I remember the Audax fibreglass bass units from Maplin well.
As I remember its parameters suited both sealed and reflex
loading, though obviously in very different sized boxes.
I can't find that model number in WinISD.
