Agree.... but if you have another thin wire you can wind and connect pin to pin easier than you reuse the existing, beside the existing still quite big too. With replacing with thin wire you will get more space for new winding for powering you amp.
 
afaik, AT smps have an ac socket that lets you run a monitor from it and ATX doesn't. That so?

I come across plenty of them. Some work without being plugged into a motherboard (without mods) and some don't. Safe to assume those that work don't need the 1 amp load on the 5v rail? If not, what's the danger of not having the 1 amp load? I've been running a T-Amp from one for a few months now and haven't noticed any problems but I'd like to be sure.

Can you post the July Article? I am having trouble accessing my QST Account. Also, I just downloaded a good article from the 2001 QEX for a 500W SMPS for HF Amps. e I forgot whare I was when I downloaded it, I will send you the pdf.
