Yes your probably right about that, in my experience poweramps benefit from being driven by an active pre.
My main system uses an excellant Corda Headphone/pre-amp to drive a KT88 valve poweramp, which although it has a built in passive pre, definately sounds more dynamic when driven by an active pre-amp. Im not up to building my own active pre, the passive was within my abilitys but i would'nt know how to configure an op-amp as a unity gain buffer?? unless you can direct me to a circuit diagram. Failing that i suppose i'll just have to watch epay for a while- maybe pickup a cheap NAC to drive it. I thought the passive pre may be good enough with the soundcard driving it, but i suppose there's no substitute for a proper setup.
