Hello all
I have recently acquired an Aleph J and absolutely love the sound of the amp. Although I would like something with more power. My speakers are Legacy Audio Focus HD, 4ohm.
I'm wondering which Pass Labs amps sound similar to the Aleph J. From my research it looks like the XA models are somewhat similar in design?
In my price range I have been considering these on the used market
xa30.5
xa30.8
Xa25
Can anyone tell me if these sound similar to the AJ or should I be considering a different model for the AJ sound signature?
To summarize, im looking for an amp with the AJ sound signature but with more fullness, weight, bloom
Thanks

Pa and Wayne are most qualified to reply to that
though ......... 30.5 definitely showing differential nature, so no dominant 2nd harmonic in THD spectra
30.8, even if also fully differential, deliberately having more 2nd, so closer to J
XA25, not differential, dominant 2nd, but ultra low in THD levels
some info, even if not real help in your trilema

I'm not interested or shall I say I'm not capable of building an amp.
I should also mention, I'm looking for more fullness. I have other amps that give me more fullness, bloom, weight than the AJ

This seems like a trick question. An Aleph J is the amp that sounds like an Aleph J.
It is possible to build a somewhat more capable Aleph J, because this is DIY. Think dual-mono, improved power transformers, increased supply capacitance. The FirstWatt amps are built to a more affordable price point. We can make modest improvements.

Ask Papa or Wayne to build you one then.
You'll get exactly the sound you love matched to your speakers.
Or get Zen Mod to build you one.
you Dodo
Papa and Wayne are already building them

while Mighty ZM is building strictly Babelfishes, not FW or PL knockouts

So educate me then.
What is it Papa and Wayne are building?
And explain to me what the bablefish is...
I see your thred on the kit but I don't see any specs nor do I see any explanation of what you goals are for the BF

Don't worry about the name that was dropped. Zen Mod and 2 pico share their personal affection that way. 😉
There are currently no PL or FW amplifiers more powerful than the Aleph J that mimic
its particular sound. Of what's available, the XA30.8 is probably the closest, given
it's 2nd harmonic character. Of older pieces, the Aleph 5 or a pair of Aleph 2's
might work for you.

Or how about bi amping / multi amping AJ? OP can compare single vs multi with one speaker as a mono playback. No need to buy another AJ beforehand. 🙂
There are also DIY projects like Aleph J-X and Aleph BJX with more power.
I expect both should sound divine and with Aleph J character.

I'm not quite sure what you are after. I've got an Aleph 4 (100W) and an Aleph J (25W).
The Aleph J is a far sweeter sounding amplifier and doesn't really sound any weaker than the bigger Aleph 4.

I saw in another thread you said you have B&W 683 speakers.
Could you please say a few words how good Aleph J can drive (control) them?
I have the same B&W 683 speakers right now. The first one, not S2.
The Alephs drove them very very well.
I've got B&W CM8 s3s now which sound brilliant with the Aleph J.
The Aleph J is far better in my opinion.

If you bear in mind that in order to get an extra 3dB from a 25W amplifier you would need 250W. The Aleph J at 25W is really quite dynamic when built with a decent power supply.
In all respects you would expect the Aleph 4 to sound better but it doesn't.
The Aleph 4 has dual PSU with 100 000uF caps.
The Aleph J only has a single PSU with dual diodes and 33 000uF caps per channel.
