Pass Labs 1.2 Amplifier

Dear GeeVee

I started at the other end. The Aleph 1.2 is running, but I am still in the process of building a P1.7 and a Xono.

It all started when I was searching the web in need of a phono pre. Somehow I stumbled over Ralph Stens page and a plan was made. I ordered Ralphs PCB's as I didn't had the equipment right then. Well honestly I couldn't make such nice Boards myself, but thats another story.

Anyway, proud as man with a plan, I told a friend about all this. Some bottles of wine and whisky later we talked ourself into making the whole chain. After a lot of reading and planing we started with the Aleph 1.2. It took us two weeks to make most of the cases as we also already made the small ones for the Xono and P1.7. Stupidly we even worked on January the 1st. We corrected the faults on the 2nd... 🙄

To make a long story short. When we first fired the Aleph up, ... nothing happend. But hey, I guess this happend to all of us once in a time 😉 Ok, next try and my friend and I just starred at each other. First we thought that there must be something wrong... until we found that there is so much more detail as with my old and trusty Threshold S-300 it is almost unbelievable. If you have any doubt in making one, don't. It is the best thing that happened to me. Don't tell this to my wife please 😀

As you already built a P1.7 and a Xono, I guess it shouldn't be a problem for you. There just a few things. The matching was no problem at all. I ordered 140 MosFets and we could match them at around 0.2%. That shouldn't be the problem. The Circuit is actually very forgiving, we had to change a few parts as we had a lower railvoltage. This was no problem at all. We played around with the bias a bit until we thought that we are were it should be.

The real thing is actually just the sheer amount of aluminium you need. We made the heatsinks ourself with a CNC and a 40t press. Please don't ask...
The heatsink is probably the key to it all. It shouldn't be too big, as it takes too long to heat up. But not to small, as it would overheat.

Well anyway, there is a foto of the unfinished amp just before the firing it up. The case is not anodized yet. Wiring just connected, but not nice. If you are interessted I can add some picture when we are finished. If we finish it , that is.😛

PS: Dear Ralph, if you are reading this. I haven't talked to you for some time. I was somehow distracted by this project 😱

PPS: Thank you Papa for all the work you have done and for sharing your knowledge with us.

To be honest, I think a Aleph 2 has more than sufficent power for whatever you throw at it.

I was just unshure as my speakers are quite currentconsuming. I blew up two Luxman M-03 (one stereo Amp as bi-amping on each speaker) and replaced the railfuses on my Threshold S-300 a few times. I was therefore not shure if the Aleph 2 would be powerful enough. But I guess it is.

We are now also building an Aleph 2 now for my friend. The plan was, that he would use the S-300. But the sound of the Alephs is that much better, that there was no discussion about it.

Hi Powerdan, Sakellogg and all.

Well done lads. Looks like i'm not the only one attempting this beast.

So far I have commenced work on the chassis, and procured all of the heatsinks.
The weight of them is unbelievable

I am taking photos of my progress, and once I get heavilly into construction I will post pics of my progress.

So far the P.1.7 and the xono are working very well and I am delighted at their performance.

They are feeding a pair of Perreaux 8000C poweramps. Lots of power but not much finesse

Thanks.

George.

Using SMPS - Suitability?

Hi all

I have commenced assembly of the power supplies for my 1.2 amps, and whilst trolling the internet, I discovered these 2000W SMPS from Conexelectronic.

Connexelectronic

Unfortunately I know very little about these beasts.

I would be very appreciative if anyone could advise me on the suitability and performance of such power supplies for this application.

They are very cost effective.

Thanks

Regards,

George.

casework schematics

Hi All

as part of my 1.2 build adventures, I have completed the design of the case work.
This has been designed in AutoCAD, and is a 3D file, ready for exporting as a 3D DXF to a CNC milling machine.

If anyone wants the cad drawings / files, drop me a line and I will be happy to email them to you.

Even if its not exactly what you want, you could easily modify it

Regards
George.

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone could assist me in the usage of SMPS in hi power Class A designs.

Please refer to my post No.26 for further info

Thank you

Regards

George

george, i thought about doing that myself.
i had a feeling that i wouldnt gain anything by doing so.
i tried a scaled down version and i still needed lots of caps to get good low ripple.
that being said someone might have a better idea of how to clean the pulses.
why a pwm insted of the normal one?
if its to save some coin, it didnt add up for ME.maybe youll have better luck

and nice work with the amp setup.
looks like it will look cool.
now that ive said the nice things that came to mind when reading your last posts, ill say the mean ones too.
looks like you have a nice cnc setup at your disposal, for that sir, im jelious, and you suck. 😛

Ahh you have made me smile!!

I wish I had a CNC milling machine!!.

Fortunately I have some contacts that can do the work for me, for the appropriate payment in beer currency!!

Looks like a lot of beer.
