Has anyone on this forum built the Pass D-1? Looks like a very unique piece...........How come its out of production?

Probably not a reason for Pass Labs to discontinue the product, but soon or later a problem for building clones:
The PCM63 is out of production.
It was regarded as one of the best sounding DAC chips ever and although it features "only" a 20 bit resolution, it can still be found in some newer state-of-the-art DVD- and CD-players.
There are many ways out. I suggest having a look at David Broadhurst's DAC featuring PCM1704 or, if you like your circuit simple, some of the NOS designs with the old Philips TDA15xx DACs.
You can always use the Pass Labs I/V converter / output stage as long as your DAC has a current output.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was not aware that the D to A chips had been discontinued. Bet that ruined Waynes day.....
Will look into the others as suggested. I do want to use the unique output stage though...that is pretty cool.

The last batch of parts for the D1 came from a broker, and took forever to get. That alone made the D1 more trouble than it was worth.
Nelson does not wish to make a product that we cannot support. So, we took the few remaining parts and put them on the shelf.

Anything new on the DAC horizon at at Pass Labs? Just curious...and I may go ahead and build it if I can locate enough of the PCM63's.

The good thing I see with this output stage is that one can eliminate the preamp alltogether and use the provided vol control.
But i would need some changes to connect it to the voltage bit streem DAC's.
Any ideas?
