Yes, that would be normal behavior after hardwiring the pot wiper bypassed but leaving it in the parallel circuit. You could treat the pot as a mute switch of sorts, but don't turn it all the way down while the amp is powered up. It may affect DC offset if you do, so just to be safe, leave it alone while playing music.
