I do not know if that was their intention, bu it dampens the peak on the woofer-in-box impedance and decrease "interaction" of the XO network with this peak.
It may either be to dampen the impedance peak(s) at the lower end (I think it is a reflex box which has therefore two of them) and lower interaction of this with the 1st order crossover (as mentioned by PKI).
But it could also be to reduce interaction with the crossover caused by the rising impedance at higher frequencies due to Lvc.
