The question is: Who is the current caliph? 😉 I presume that little grand vizier will take over soon! 🙂
The former caliph will have the honorable task to drive the woofers!

Boy, all those folks reading 6moons sure are going to wonder what those numbers mean. Maybe, some of them will turn to diy after reading that.
Super cool article. As I was reading, I had the Science Channel on in the background.
They were taking about transistors. My ears perked up.

I like Papa's quote about the SemiSouth SJEP120R125 being able to replace a 300B. Any takers? 🙂
Nelson,
Do you have any plans to incorporate the X circuit into the First Watt line? Is this new SemiSouth jfet possible the closest we will come to the holy grail in discrete devices? It seems quite ominous that this particular device showed when it did and with such huge voltage margins. Nice.
You have a really nice playroom for your hobbies. I guess diligence and hard work do pay off. Thanks guys for the 6moons photos.

Probably not and probably not

Facing the possible wrath of shameless capitalist propaganda accusation (that would be another forum come to think of it)... the preview on the J2 just posted on 6moons.
Grat article, but wait there is more - I'll wait until J2 arrives, in my mind The amp of the amps. Once you hear it...
Hey, it hurts, everyone is clicking on me...

F1 JFET swap?
Hi,
I'm still at the paint-by-numbers stage of DIY, so thanks in advance for your patience and guidance. I saw here and in the 6 moons article that installing the new JFETs is an option for the F2, and I wondered if this would work for the F1 as well?
I tried to do a search of "F1 and JFET" but "F1" was too short a string of letters to be able to search here. A shame considering the naming conventions for all of Papa's FirstWatt offerings. 🙁
My vested interest follow-up: If it's possible in the F1, how would it change the sound and performance of the amp?
My general curiosity follow-up: How does the JFET swap change the sound and performance of the F2?
Hi AR2, From your memory how does the J2 compares to F3 or F5? Is the J2 has a very single ended sounding too? Closer sounding to F3 than F5?
Where do we sign for the new "Silicon Carbide Power JFET group buy"? 😕
I like your style, Mr Pass. 😉

M

Closer sounding to F3 than F5?
Tonally, I would put it between. More relaxed than the F5,
more control and dynamics than F3.

Hi AR2, From your memory how does the J2 compares to F3 or F5? Is the J2 has a very single ended sounding too? Closer sounding to F3 than F5?
It is very good question for me since I was just getting ready to start F3 before I visited Mr. Pass. My particular intended application was to replace my Aleph 30 that is driving RAAL ribbons. Not that I have to, since that amp performs so well in that place, but I needed to find some reason to get my iron burning. Based on other people's opinions I was thinking that F3 would be the right choice. Obviously, my interest was in this case solely about the top end.
During the listening session F3 sounded just like a tube amp. I think I never heard the amp that is so much tube like. Great liquid mids, yet very nicely defined sound, not to loose or not to wooly. The top end sounded nice but not too pronounced.
Than we played J2 and I was so blown away with the beauty of the sound. Awesome mids, but the top end was just like a dream. The closest possible top end to the Aleph that there is. It is hard to find anything that is even remotely close to the Aleph top end and J2 is sort of similar. There is that great note to it, some kind of openness not metallic and not forced but just clean and natural. My feeling is that it has better sound than Aleph, sort of more rounded, better mids as well. Most likely due to the great linearity of all jFets, less distortion than Mosfets. In any case that amp has everything one would want from the amp.
Like I expressed before Feastrex were great test speakers since their top end is extremely capable, and very similar to ribbons. That is one full ranger where you really do not need anything on the top. Anything added would be plainly wrong. So thanx to that fact we were able to hear any single nuance coming from the amp. When we tried Lowthers they just didn't compare - not at all when it comes to the top end, so take me seriously - we were able to hear anything that there is when it comes to the upper registers.
Than the greatest surprise came with F5. F5 was used all the time on the bottom, but Mr. Pass had one more F5 which was in the car. He didn't even plan to use that one for the testing, but since we tried all that we wanted we asked for F5F5 combo. So we took it from the car, unpacked and voila. It sounded perfect. Great top end. Not as perfect as J2, but in our collective opinion it was the second greatest amp. If you take in the account that J2 is unobtainable, and you would like to have something close to it I would say F5 is that. We were all surprised because somehow we accepted the fact that F5 is for the lower end, having it in that place all the time we just took it as a norm. When played on the top and the bottom we were very pleasantly surprised. Later in the car with Cviler and Variac we all concluded that in the system we listened F5F2 was the winning system, and next to it was F5F5. So another great combination for the three way system could be F5F3F5.
I hope this gave you some idea, short of listening the units on your own.
Stay well
AR2

Mr. Pass, not just with your amps but even with your words you are proving your concept that less is more. I wrote above that War and Piece to say what you greatly summed in a few words.
🙄
.........
Stay well

I'm certainly biased , but seems that you still didn't hear Papa's best Aleph ......
don't count that amp out so easily

I know that I am wrong, but it must be Aleph J aka Babelfish that you are alluring to? It doesn't seems like Choky to be mentioning Babelfish? 😀😀😀
Never mind... my wrong.

C,c,c I am just looking into Aleph XJ boards.
