PA mid speaker

Hello

I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong area but i could find no 'building' forum sub-section. Admins, please move/delete if you see fit.

As an introduciton, I am starting building 6 x 18" folded horns (3 a side) for techno gigs, and now am intending to get my teeth into the mid horn design phase 😀

I have 4 x 8" RCF L8L750's lying around that I want to use (i know old drivers but they need using). PDF here: http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...=Z4zgpehs77E-Eai1CNEpAA&bvm=bv.75097201,d.d2s

I have sketched up an idea here: midideamade_zps4ae09e93.jpg Photo by butchandmungo | Photobucket

Throat area is: 100cm2.
Mouth area is: 1440cm2
Horn length: 50cm.

As you can see this is a simple design, aimed for a simple construction, for this is key im afraid. The rig im build is strictly DIY, im sick of box builders (UK) charging ridiculus prices for pieces of wood glued together 😡 but unfortunately this leaves just my slightly limited tool and skill set.
Apart from this, my main worrys are: will the dispersion will be enough with two a side, whether they would be able to keep up with the aformentioned bass horns (which would not be run hard i might add, i prefer the idea of more speakers, pushed less hard), and if there would be any serious comp filtering between the two mid horns.

Hornresp sims suggest a pair would get to 200 hz comfortably, 132dB at xmax.

Any suggestions, questions, critisisms or tips are welcomed.

Thanks

The L8L750 is certainly a candidate for horn-loading.

Why not make the horn's horizontal dispersion as wide as you need, then stack the two 8's vertically? A simple conical flare should work, while saving a bit of wood & labor.

In reality, I have my doubts that horn-loaded 8" drivers with a 2.5mm XMax will play down to meet any horn sub. Personally, I would insert a proper midbass driver between them. Perhaps you might consider 4 tops, each with an 8 on a shorter horn & a 15 for your mid complement?

I was afraid that might be the case, as it stands I would really like to avoid having to go for a 4-way system (equipment constraints).

Would exchanging the 8" for, maybe a beefy 10", or even 12"(although prefer the smaller drivers so can meet 1" comps) be a more realistic solution?

I understand that trying to squeeze as much bandwidth as possible out of each cab is going to have a detrimental effect on the overall sound of the project but I have no choice, money is tight.

Thank you for your response by the way.

Cheers

I just suggested this 10" midhorn in another posting:

AudioRoundTable.com: Pi Speakers => Midrange Horn

The designer, Wayne Parham, is quite easy-going about allowing his designs to be reproduced or modified for personal use only. Ask nicely & say thank-you.

The Delta 10A is rather inexpensive here in the States, & the Qts is high enough that you could experiment with venting the rear chamber for a bit more extension. Or, locate a driver in your area with similar T/S Parameters. Wayne crosses it to a 1" comp around 1600Hz passive, but I'll bet you could get it to 2kHz active.
