Convention in Aus is that downward sweep of finger sets lighting/power switches to the on state.
I have read that in Asia the opposite is true.
Slightly OT, I have a cousin who created illuminated dynamic Male/Female toilet signs that could be swapped remotely....I am told that the resultant confusion at parties/raves etc is pretty funny.

Ah yes, Australian tradies (using that word very loosely). We had some wiring done and something didn't work, so I found the fault and fixed it. Years ago, when I physically built a house, I did all of the wiring and had it checked by an electrician. The inspector asked me who did the wiring because it was very neat.
In Australia, all house electrical and communications wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. In New Zealand, where the homeowner can do minor work, such as replacing a GPO, the death rate from electrocution is lower. Union work protection rules again.
