Convention in Aus is that downward sweep of finger sets lighting/power switches to the on state.
I have read that in Asia the opposite is true.
Slightly OT, I have a cousin who created illuminated dynamic Male/Female toilet signs that could be swapped remotely....I am told that the resultant confusion at parties/raves etc is pretty funny.

Was the electrical system installer Australian?

Ah yes, Australian tradies (using that word very loosely). We had some wiring done and something didn't work, so I found the fault and fixed it. Years ago, when I physically built a house, I did all of the wiring and had it checked by an electrician. The inspector asked me who did the wiring because it was very neat. :)

In Australia, all house electrical and communications wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. In New Zealand, where the homeowner can do minor work, such as replacing a GPO, the death rate from electrocution is lower. Union work protection rules again.
