Hello all, I know there is quite a few posts about jbl 2242 builds and originally I was going to build a pair of 4645C clones... However I ended up purchasing a pair of Altec 817a from my local school district recently (couldn't pass them up, also with a pair of mrii 594 and 291 drivers!!! They were pretty much giving away that "junk").
So right now I'm thinking of putting the 2242s under the 817 cabinets but results in a huge box. (exterior dimensions around 26.5"x33.75"x37.5") I was just planning on maybe filleting the corners with sonotube and adding an additional interior rear baffle, then pack it all with sand. Targeting the internal volume of the box back to around 8 CF. I have a pretty decent sized listening area but the layout won't really allow the subs to placed adjacent unless I got rid of my vinyl storage. The 817s replaced my pair of jbl 2226s in a 4507 boxes which were much smaller.
Before I commit to the build, I was just wanted to see if there were any other ideas people may have. I know it's all PA stuff, but I'll be using it mainly for home hifi listening.
Thank you in advance!

Lucky you! Not quite sure what you're proposing other than putting the 817s on top.
Since true subs rarely work all that well where the mains are without significant EQ/DSP, any options for tall 18" bottom firing concrete formers/Sonotube subs?

With such a large area to play with I wasn't sure if there were other designs maybe that may be an option. Just thought of maybe W-bins today, but that would likely be too large. I'm running an active setup and was planning on EQing the subs anyway. I'll look into the idea of sonotube subs. I'm not sure how well the JBL suspension will hold up, but their pro stuff is pretty much bullet proof so I'm not too worried.
I didn't scope it out, but the theory if in doubt: https://stereointegrity.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/DriverOrientation.pdf
......though most folks just use: 24,849/(Xmax*Fs^2)

Waxx, sorry I missed the post! I actually have the 515-16G. I didn't get around to building the enclosures during winter break. Started a new design and might have finally found something that should give decent results, I can get around (theoretically) 25hz-160hz. Should help the 817 in its weaker areas. I thought the 2226 was a mid bass champ, but I'm starting the prefer the Altecs. (Actually it hurts a bit because the Altecs outshine the 2226/2446 yuichi combo, that horn took some time mill and I think the 291/MR is a better combo of the two)It all depends on what drivers are in the 817a, i've seen them with 921a, 416, 515C and 515E drivers and they are all sounding different in that cabinet. But using eq and active crossovers (dsp or analog) to match the subs with the 817 is a good id.
I've been using a pair of miniDSP 2x4s so I have fairly flexible options to integrate the 2242s to the 817.
Indeed! Originally designed derivations of the circa 1948 800 series small format PA/cinema horn systems. Note that the 800 series cab had a parallel panel horn profile same as the large format 'A' series while the brochure shows the later expanding horn of the A7: A800 Vott, Altec 800 VoTT BrochureIt all depends on what drivers are in the 817a
Some [no doubt used] measured specs showing considerably different EBPs, but the mean gives a good idea of what modern drivers will be best suited: 803A specs
