Matt that happens all the time where a silicon chip is driven beyond its S.O.A. ......like any component it will allow you to do that so many times and it will not recover...this is a usual instance with diodes...in laymans terms you can only kick the cat so many times

Some datasheets show current falling off with increasing temperature. I would think it sufficiently beneficial if you could just maintain the max current by keeping the device below 70degC
