outperforming 24/96 DIY DAC: where?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a DIY project to build my own 24bit/96Khz capable DAC.
I will need it to work on 6 channels, so 3 stereo Dacs or a full 6 channels Dac project is needed.

I found two projects here on the forum:

DAC5 by Norbert

which seems to be really outperforming, but it's still in development: I e-mailed Norbert and he answered he does not know how the project will be finished.

Second option is:

mini-dac-2 by andrei

which seems easier to be built but it uses SM5865 delta-sigma DACs that I do not like a lot.
But it's ready

So Does anyone know about other up to date DIY DACs projects?

well, maybe my answer wont be interesting but I have made 24/96 recently to use with my computer and I noticed that the digital output of my audio card gives 3 stereo spdif streams... So maybe it would be possible to us 3 24/96 dacs to do your job if you are using a pc as a source.

I am using a WM8740 eval board from wolfson and a DIR1704 eval board from TI; it works very well with my pc and I receive correctly all the digital streams from my live 5.1 soundcard.

Out of intrest, what music source do you have in the PC that is 24/96??

Im in the process of making a dac using a PCM1798, which is compatable with the PCM1794, which is the 1792 but hardware controlled.

This DAC is basically MWP's but with the PCM179x instead. I would think the easiest way for you to do this would be to build three stereo dacs of a similar design and feed them from the three stereo digi outputs on a soundcard. You will obviously need a 24/96 soundcard for this.

first of all thank you to everyone for your support!

I agree with you 5th element: probably the best thing to do is to use 3 stereo DACs.
I'm really interested in your project, could you please provide more details?
For example why are you going to use PCM1798 instead of PCM1794?

Simple. I can get hold of 98's but not 94's. This is not just the samples from TI either, althought they are very handy. I cannot find anywhere local where I can buy a 98 from either. Although the 94 seems to be the superior chip on paper it would be nice to do a comparison. As the pin out is identical between the 98 and the 94, if I can get hold of a 94 at a later date then I can simply just swap em over.

For more details simply look to MWP's provided link to the overclokers place and look at the schematic. I have basically emulated the PCM2902 and DIR1703 and added on the PCM1798 by myself, using the TI data sheet on how to wire up the chip. Hopefully this should all provide pleasing results! I am yet to see if it will even work haha! But fingers crossed.
