how about putting the speaker cabs in a thin plastic bag, used to do this on outdoor gigs with bin liners, works suprisingly well
Just something fairly decent, we just need some background music and am looking at the ebay route at the moment.
You could go out and purchase some car audio loudspeaker drivers, measure then create a cabinet with waterproof (deck finishing) paint. I suggest a car audio speaker because they are designed for different temperatures, most are waterproof, and a two-way coaxial driver would be great. I have been thinking about outdoor speakers too, and this is what I was thinking. My other idea was to use the Garden lights (Green things that stick into the ground) and simply use those for ambience, after sticking a driver inside ofcourse.
Hope you enjoy your proj if you decide to build it!

I have made outdoor speakers and I did utilise car audio drivers.....what I did was make the cabinets out of MDF and applied marine resin and fibreglass and painted them....they are still going strong after 10 years.....(mind you I brought them in the winter..LOL)

My friend and I purchased these two 4" drivers from Wal-mart as a joke to push sound...just sound, any sound from the drivers. The drivers are made by Road Gear a lower end of Jensen, if that's possible. Basically the magnet is small, the diaphragm is made of some rigid black material, cone is of this cheap gold colour material and the surround is foam. From the -50 degree, and 40+ degree weather that those 'puppies' have been through they have survived some serious stuff...BTW, these were not pulled out during Winter! The Marine finish that Joe used seems like a great idea! Did you pick that up from Home Depot? If you have one around?
I got the materials from an automotive store (canadian Tire here).....I tell you its hard as Hell when its done and lasts forever........10-4 on the Jensen speakers....they use to be good back in the days we had the 6x9`s in the rear deck....that was sound!!!...hahahaha
