Osram IT-PT_VIP 270 Ballast issues?

Hi

I have an older DLP projector (DiaMond nView) that uses an Osram VIP 270 bulb.

After hundreds of trouble-free hours (not bad considering it was a freebie) it has developed an issue - The bulb will turn on, then after 3-4 seconds, something will crackle a bit and the bulb will turn off again.

I've read around the forums a bit, and I'm wondering whether I have a ballast issue. I've read about people fooling the projector and replacing the light source, but first of all, is there something I can do to repair/diagnose the ballast?

I have checked the three wires going into the Ignitronic, which I assume is the ballast/striker, and the voltage appears to be relatively constant (around 120vac?) apart from when the crackling is going on, which I suppose might make sense from an inductance point of view. Anyway, it seems like the rest of the projector is still wanting the lamp to go, so that's why I suspect the ballast, rather than one of the heat switches or microswitches.

Although I'm an electronic engineer, I have very little idea on the specific workings of projectors and their troubleshooting. Hopefully somebody out there can give me a few pointers, please?

Thanks,
Anton
