I don't think that the last picture is tweaked enough.
You should add second resistor to the base of Q1 (to -12V) because now bias and output DC voltage depends strongly on temperature of transistor.

Yes I can imagine that, and I think we are closer to that than you think!
In fact, we are there already with many speakers which you can order with all kinds of finish according to your tast and/or trend.
I think it is only a matter of time until a component maker comes up with customised front panels (your color, your control layout). Just put a little microcontroller in charge of the user interface. Wait until the economy picks up again.
