How about 8.4" XGA TFT with 350:1 CR (measured at 0 degrees angle) 262K (18-bit) colors and 25 ms (6+19ms) response time - with a controller with VGA (RGB) input for $590? Maybe a bit expensive compared to a 15" monitor, but the size is extremely convenient. However, no one has dismantled this LCD so it may be necessary to, guess what, extend the cable...

They also have 15" kit for $700 with a XGA panel with 25 ms RT and 450:1 CR (measured at zero angle) with full 24-bit colors. Also there's an excellent 12.1" TFT.

Actually 18-bit (3x6) colors are just fine, with dithering you can "see" 16.2M colors. However, it's the contrast ratio which is the most important single factor. With bad contrast you will not see all of the colors, at some level they will dimish to grey colors.
I agree $600 - $700 is much, but if the LCD is 12.1" (much smaller than 15", no problems with cutting corners with OHP fresnels) and has a real measured contrast of 500:1 and RT <25 ms then it's fine.
Otherwise it would be better to put your money (~$1200) to a pj like Hitachi PJTX10 which is a WVGA (854 X 480) with 16.7M colors and 800:1 contrast (it's LCD and not a DLP, so it's much better than lets say the Infocus X1). Or wait year or two for better CR LCD monitors (there are some xpensive 700:1 and 800:1 CR monitors).
