Just wanted to start a thread on computer sound. I found that my computer stereo setup sounded best with the volume control of the computer set to 50% and turning the volume control of my amp up.
Try it and tell me if it sounds better for you too... then we could perhaps find out why... For me, its such a startling difference that I'm listening to all my mp3s again.

I guess that's the effect of psychoacoustics... Theory says it's better the other way round: maximum out of the sound card and reduced volume on the amp. That way the DAC in the soundcard has more resolution to play with.
Maybe your DAC is non-linear at full output?

I would disagree.
The theory I think says that the volume control on the soundcard has nothing to do with the resolution available to the dac. It is a seperate gain stage of much lower sound quality than that of your amp. Hence, when the majority of gain is in the amp you get a better sound than when its in the sound card.

I noticed the same with my cheap soundcard and powered speakers.... i keep the output level not beyond, say, 70%. I noticed sometimes the soundcard CLIPS otherwise 😱 ... noise is increased with higher volume levels too.
