Opinions sought - should I mod a Sony PS-X45 table?

It's a Craig's list find, 40 bucks, and came with a Grado black cartridge. It works well enough, but I really don't need the automatic functions. It seems like removing the mechanics for the auto functions, moving the power transformer to external, and adding dampening to the chassis would be an improvement and not very difficult. I'm seeking opinions and suggestions.

Seems like good ideas across the board. It was inexpensive enough that should it not go well you are not out a lot.

How about some pictures, could you for example transfer the motor and electronics (sans transformer) to a solid diy plinth? Or too ambitious?

Thanks for the response, kevinkr. I have torn it apart at this point and will reassemble it to the original plinth to check operation. If it checks okay , I will take measurements for a diy plinth. I will try to get some pictures posted, soon.
