Opinions of HK Citation 16

I picked up one of these cheap. It's not in the best shape and some output devices are blown but the dual power supplies are there. Since I'm going to have to take the whole thing apart to sand and repaint it should I put the old thing back together or use the large chassis for another type of amp? What are your opinions on the sound of this amp?

The sound is wonderful!!! I have 4 citation 16 in a multi- amp set up (Bass-Mid-horn-tweeter). The sound is very clean with a deep sound stage. This amp can deliver approximatly 250 watts Peak / channel.

I had try QSC, Peavey, Bryston 3B, Amcron,Quad 303,Qed, Crest Audio, and little brother the citation12, and NOTNING have the sound of the Citation 16.

It is VERY hi-fi. At my knowledge(read my ears!! ),the BRYSTON 4B is the one that have the closest sound of the citation 16 but the 16 is less grainy in the high.:cheerful:

My speaker are all JBL and nothing (for me ) is better than a 16!!🙂

In 1975 the HK Citation 16 was a great amplifier. It sounded much better than a Phase Linear 400 or a Crown DC300A.

The ESS 500 sounded cleaner on the mids and highs, but sounded weak on the low end and got hot.

Bi-amping with an electronic crossover (not this fools bi-amping you hear about today) with both of these amps was the answer.

When the Yamaha B2 became available it replaced the ESS.

With the addition of 0.1µF film bypass caps to the input coupling cap and the cap in the feedback loop to ground, the Altec 9440A sounds better than 99.9% of all amplifiers.

It really kicks sand in the face of the Citation 16.

The Leach LSR&D 101 is my all time favorite production amplifier.

There are certain things I like better about the Stasis no global feedback amplifiers, but overall, especially considering the cost:
Leach.

If I owned a blown Citation 16 I would re-build it with Leach boards.

Looking at the schematic for the Threshold S500 (Stasis) amplifier and comparing it with the output stage of the Leach, it looks like it would be easy to adapt the Stasis principle to the Leach.

This may become my next DIY project.
