Open baffle speakers wall mounted behind the screen. Crazy stupid idea ??

Hello all,

Open baffle speakers are recommended to place away from walls for best performance.

But what exactly happens if i place them very near to the rear wall ?? Or what if we hang them on wall itself ??? ( stupid idea may be !! )

What is the disadvantage?? Clarity is lost ?? Bass is reduced?? Or some other ill effects ???

The reason for asking is .... Is it a totally bad idea to try open baffles with 12" drivers wall mounted behind the projector screen ?? (This may not be good. But i want to know why...)

behind the projector screen ??

If mounted in the wall, that's an infinite baffle, with better bass than an open baffle.
The screen in front will block some of the sound, unless specially designed otherwise.
Movie theaters do have front speakers behind the screen, so it's possible to do.

Im not mounting the driver on the wall. Driver is mounted on a wooden baffle (may be 2ftx2ft).

This baffle will be hanged to the wall behind the screen. Distance between baffle and wall will be 8 to 9 inches.

What are the bad effects of this arrangement. ???

here we go with pictures.
these will go behind the screen for L C R channels.

Are there any illeffects like rear wall reflections, cancellation of frequencies etc etc .....

Okay....in terms of physical construction, the driver is mounted on an open baffle.
An open baffle implies abbundant fre space behind it ... at least few meters.
The idea is that the back wave "gets lost".
But if there is a large wall 8 inches behind, while baffle itself measures 2 x 2 ft ... as I said earlier "it´s not an open baffle any more"
Soundwaves will exit sideways but first bouncing from baffle to wall, back and forth.

But technically it need not be an open baffle essentially. Im just concerned about the bad effects.
So RESONANCES is one to deal with i guess.
Do the test yourself, just grab the open baffle and place it 8 inches from the wall, play some nusic (or pink noise) , listen, then move it closer and further away.

As a side note: a 2ft by 2ft open baffle is really *small* .

Not sure how much bass you can get .

Note 2:
wiseoldtech 12" speakers behind a screen would cause the screen to vibrate and distort clarity.
Who'd want that issue?
Tap gently on the screen's surface, what do you think would happen.
Thbey are not behind the screen as in hidden by it, who would use them that way?
The OP means the baffle front is behind the screen line, but obviously to the sides, right and left ... where conventional speakers might be mounted anyway.

Im not bothered about bass at all. Subs will take care. Issues with Mids and highs im thinking about. Mainly reflections as you said. This is for movies mainly. Not for music.

At a later stage i may construct a full baffle wall behind screen. But it takes some more months. Till then im just thinking of mounting the speaker as shown in the pics.

Just want to compare bad effects of this idea Vs sealed boxes behind screen.

A friend of mine had a floor standing subwoofer as part of his HT system, and it was several feet from his flat screen tv.
Every time the bass "thumped" his screen would shake and cause blur and distortions to the video.
There is a limit to how much bass can be turned up with these situations.

Im not concerned about screen vibrations etc.

I have to make a decision whether to build sealed boxes or my baffles idea will work temporarily (till i build a proper baffle wall)

with my baffles near to the wall, ...Will there be any bad effects in terms of audio ??

Like....Resounds ..
Muddy or unclear mids and vocals, ..
Shouty highs or loss of highs.. Etc etc

If baffles mounted on wall is really a bad idea, .... Il build sealed boxes.

I agree with those who say just try it. If you could get someone to hold the baffle and move it towards the wall whilst you sit and listen, that would give you a very easy to judge situation. Because the open aspect at the back is compromised by the near wall, I would suggest putting quite a bit of foam or wool or other absorbent between the wall and the baffle. It will clean up the sound. Try it and see.
