Hey,
A long time ago I built a pair of open baffle speakers. Inspired by Dick Olsher I purchased his plans to build the Basszilla Platinum edition. They were designed to work best with tube based amplification. As my audio taste has changed over the years I have moved to an active system utilizing streaming as my only source.
These speakers weigh over 130 pounds each, so shipping would most likely eliminate most potential buyers. These cost me around $3000 to build. The crossovers were upgraded utilizing better quality capacitors than the plans originally proposed. I’d like to sell the crossovers and drivers as a complete kit minus the cabinets. I’m not sure what they are worth but if you’re interested I will consider any reasonable offers. To be clear this will include all drivers and crossovers. If you happen to live in the Bay Area (San Jose or similar) the complete system including cabinets would be available. These are no longer used but all components are in excellent condition. So there you have it.
Pictures and a link to follow.
Thanks

The tweeter is an Arum Cantus G2
The woofer is an Eminance Definimax 4015 LF
The woofer crossover is not shown as it’s inside the cabinet.
The upper baffle is solid maple that’s 1 1/2” thick
All wiring is solid core copper.

These speakers do require a larger room and a fair distance from the rear wall to sound their best. I really don’t want to let them go but they have gone unused for too long. I’m actively trying to sell all my passive gear. It is possible to dismantle the upper baffle and ship it as well. The base bin is very well braced, made of 3/4” mdf ( front is 1 1/2”) and so very heavy. Are they perfect? By no means but maybe a good platform with which to hear an open baffle designed by a very knowledgeable guy.
To be honest I’m selling mostly because I will be downsizing soon, moving to a much smaller place, perhaps out of state. This driven by the current state of things in America and my failure to plan ahead.

Oh wow. My parents live in the San Jose area. I visit them every time I go to Burning Amp. I would love to listen to these. And what a fantastic job you have done with the build and the crossover organization. Somebody is going to be super happy with this. Maybe I'll be the only guy to ask you to not sell them! They are keepers for sure.

GLWS.

Best,
Anand.

Thanks Anand,
For the longest time I have considered selling these and have tried a couple times. And so I try again. To increase the chances of moving them along I’ve proposed breaking them up into a “kit” of sorts. A rather complete, mostly assembled one but something that would be much easier to put together. All crossovers are functional and work very well, and the drivers are in excellent condition. I would of course put these back into service in my home before actually selling them, as a reminder of what they are and to ensure they work properly. I have been selling off all my passive gear and have moved to an active system. Lazy I suppose but certainly easier for this old guy to just enjoy music. With my passive gear it seems I was always changing something, tweaking it just a bit here and there trying to squeeze a bit more fidelity out of it. And for me the improvement was not always significant. Not an unusual scenario I expect but one that demanded more time and effort than lately I’m willing to put forth. As I said, lazy 🤔
I have enjoyed a number your posts over the years and do appreciate your take on things. I moved away from the Bay Area several years ago to retire and do miss the easy access to many things my small town just doesn’t have.
My best to you

@Jcris

I know several of my colleagues who have moved to a simple Linkwitz Lab LX Mini setup and been happy. As long as you aren’t requiring high spl’s, it’s a great speaker to listen to and functions nicely in a typical family sized living room. And it is portable, sans subs. So I get the drive to go “active” and the simplicity (depending on how look at it!). I am also considering that design for a simple basement setup that is different from my crazy reference tweakazoid stuff!

Anyway, all off topic, I apologize and GLWS!

Best,
Anand (in NC).

I actually bought the plans for the LX Mini some time ago but ran into a good deal on my current actives. The last thing I need is another pair of speakers, I guess 🤔
These are what I use these days.
A pair of “ Kites” from Meadowlarksings.com
Quite different than the open baffle. Btw , thanks for the pictures. They look very interesting, especially the visual effects on the upper baffle. I always toyed with the idea of something similar. Looks good though

I’ve had a few folks showing interest but am unsure how that will play out. The deal I have offered so far is this: $800 for the “kit” which will include all drivers ( the G2 tweeters the Fostex mids and the Eminance woofers) and all the crossovers. I will also include the maple upper baffle and all the associated wiring.
I will sell both the lower cabinets for an additional $200.
That’s $1000 total for the complete speakers plus shipping.

Wow, that is a killer deal. I have a pair of Aurum Cantus AST2560 and have heard that the G1 is spectacular. I could only imagine how it would sound in this open baffle. BTW, how does your new Beryllium compare to it?

You are within the ants nest of DIY audio members being that you are in Cali. I suspect that someone will snag these up fairly quickly. I am in Colorado, otherwise they would be my impulse buy of the month...

Nice! Do you have any prospects on a proper shipping service for these speakers? I know that some freight companies will palletize for a fee.

Of the two speaker builds that I have done, I probably have about 50 to 100 hours into the first... then the one that I'm currently working on I probably have about 50 hours into and I'm not finished. Not to mention the materials cost...

To put the Aurum Cantus G1 Tweeter into perspective, I have sat in front of a lot of nice speakers including B&W 800 D4, nice ESL speakers, the Aurum Cantus 2560 from my experience has been as enjoyable but maybe even a bit sweeter. The G1 is from the same brand and held in very high regard.

I don’t have any prospects for a proper shipping company. I have shipped several audio items over the years and have been fortunate not to have issues. Most of the time it was UPS or FedEx. But these are a whole different thing. It’s just that at this price point shipping costs become so much that it squashes interest. That’s partly why I’ve offered them without the base cabinets. I feel much more confident in being able to ship the “kit” safely.

This morning I pulled the speakers out to take some more pictures. I realized I hadn’t seen them in quite awhile. I’ve had them covered in my room. I took a bunch more pictures for those interested. Not sure how big the file is but it’s 15 photos.
I really need to get these posted on usaudiomart.
I may get these playing again soon, if this ole guy can get his duff off the couch 🤣
