I found out about "Fab Labs" today and thought it was worth posting here.
They are an open access cnc machine shop that started in the US with a mission to get people making things for themselves. The nearest one to me boasts a 3d printer, laser cutter, a milling machine capable of making pcbs, a vinyl cutter and a cnc router.
Equipment at Fab Lab Ellesmere Port - Fab Lab Ellesmere Port - Welcome to the Fab Lab Ellesmere Port website.
I want to build a pair of Metronome speakers but the wood cutting was beyond my skills but maybe with a little help from their technician all sorts could be possible.
I had never heard of them so apologies if this is old news.

Use a search engine to look for "hacker spaces" or "maker spaces" in your area.
(These terms are generic. I have never seen one of these; I understand they range from marginally equipped basic hobby shops operated by community organizations, to for-profit enterprises with the latest high-tech fabrication equipment.)
I have heard that a somewhat similar concept known as "men's sheds" started in Australia and has expanded to the UK.

I had a search on maker spaces and found there is one in Liverpool which is only a short boat trip away from me. Thanks very much for the recommendation Dale.
I will be popping in to see them when I get chance to see what they can do. I like the idea of being able to take them a file and leave with a pcb without the whole ironing and etching lark.
