They are pretty simple: You just put as much light as you can on the paper, in such a way that the lamps can't be seen by the projection lens. The lamps can be ordinary light bulbs or floodlights, nothing fancy. Get the largest diameter projection lens you can find, since that will give you the brightest image. You can use a triplet, of course. Or you can use a homemade lens like a pair of PCX or positive meniscus lenses mounted in a tube. Put it all in a box so the stray light does not wash out the image on the screen.

You can get a nice book from surplusshed.com called Popular Optics by Edmond Scientific. They have lots of plans in there, including opaque projectors. $15 US plus some for shipping
