Roland's 'Stritch' seems to sound more 'right'. All the horns I hear do so far...
Blue Notes are Killer.. I hear more echoes with zero processing, studio they made it in?
Consumer electronics are highway robbery considering these improvements the cost of which could simply be added to the price-tag without any real drop in sales, I would think..
I would guess,
(based upon my novice damaged ears, and the talk I read here about 'swing' and 'headroom'),
that the original op amp was clipping/otherwise distorting at certain frequencies, hence the harshness...
switching the ne5532 out for a $5 part was definitely a good move!

There will be tests 🙂 that's good.
The only "advice" I can offer such as it is, is to keep an open mind... it's only through extended listening sometimes that you realise that perhaps "yes this is better".
It's so easy to swap something, and be subconciously "sure" before you even listen that it will be better (or worse) so don't rush... perhaps come back again the next day and give it another go.

I replaced ne5532 with an lm4562 in the audiosource...

Then I swap the LM811 in the digital receiver with LM4562 and again I was happy with the result.

I looked in my bose wave radio(bought in an earlier more ignorant time

It has 074 quad op amps in it(2 that I found), and all same series Nichicon caps in it. I was pleasantly surprised, main board is elegant, it makes a nice CD player..
Even the transformer is exotic(by my experience).

I have put an opa into the tripath, and can't make an intelligent comparison yet, after a couple times listening.
I am going to have to do back-to back same source-same media comparisons with this.
I see people describing opa's as "warm" or "tube-like".
I have never heard a 'nice' tube amp yet, (that's YET, I will build one eventually), so I can't say if it does or not.
The mids/lows 'seem' a bit 'softer' and more 'loud', if that makes any sense.... Is that what 'warmth' is?

Are op-amps made the same way?
Or like this: "by forcing crystals of germanium or silicon to grow with impurities such as boron or phosphorus, the crystals gain entirely different electrical conductive properties. By sandwiching this material between two conductive plates (the emitter and the collector), a transistor is made."
Does the difference in sound from op amp to op amp have something to do with this process? Different IONs, different wafers?

Well this is where subjectivity comes into it... it's the sound that you like, and it can be hard to describe. It's when it all comes together into something special, and you'll know when you hear it. For me it's a sound with no sense of edginess or harshness, inky black silences when needed, effortless sense of dynamic scale when the music calls for it. And for it to do that special "magic" on most material, not just a few selected recordings.
Couldn't in all honesty tell you much about the actual manufacturing processes and how they differ between devices as manufacturers have there own proprietry techniques, but the "sound" of particular opamps seems linked to the distortion spectrum they have.

K so far I have tested from MC Goldring Eroica cart/mmf 7 phono to C1 to Elec Xover to tripath. with side B of Blue Note "Somethin' Else" for about 3 hours...
4558 is not very detailed, and sounded mono-ish. Not bright at all.
5532 had better seperation and better detail, but was BRIGHT (like needles in my ear).
tl072 was the first noticable step toward great seperation, and it was maybe a little more detailed than 5532.
opa had best seperation, was a tad less accurate than the LM.
LM was described by someone here as 'analytical', no more needs to be said.

Yeah the differecne from the 72 to the lm was not big.
I am guessing I will hear more of a difference between each when I upgrade the C1 op-amps. It will be a while before that happens though...

I got some Brown Dog adapters for the C1, am thinking of putting in tl072's instead of the more expensive options.
What's the concensus here, do it or wait til I can afford 18 $5 ones????

I have the adapters [9] loaded with tl072.
I have put a 1uf cap on each adapter as well.
Boy, what a difference. More highs and more accurate bass.
Definitely sounds different, more detail.
Going to try more expensive ones as I get them...
