Onkyo TX-8210 receiver - low volume right channel

Hello.

I was hoping I could get some input as to how to troubleshoot/repair my Onkyo receiver. It has low volume in the right channel. This is also a problem when using the headphone jack. I do not own a decent soldering iron so any recommendations for a soldering iron for DIY repairs would be appreciated as well.

Thank you.

You might have your work cut out if you haven't even a soldering iron 😱

I would say it would be worth making sure the speaker relay contacts are good. These give lots of trouble over many makes and models but they usually are a bit intermittent and also often seem to go OK if you turn up the volume. Try giving them a sharp tap with an insulated screwdriver handle.

Also confirm the problem applies to all inputs and not just one.

Beyond that I would look at a quick test of simply linking the left and right inputs to both power stages and seeing if you then get equal volume from each speaker.

If you do the problem is in the preamp stages, if you don't it is a power amp stage issue.

Thanks for the input. I recently replaced a relay on our clothing dryer's board using a wood burning tool. Not ideal (too hot) but got the job done. I figured it's time to buy a proper soldering iron with the occasional repairs that I take on.

You definitely need a proper soldering iron (preferable temperature controlled) for electronic work but as to this Onkyo... I think you have to be realistic in what you are going to be able to achieve here.

Once we get beyond basic things like speaker relays and so on then it becomes a whole different ball game in diagnosing the fault. You would need a good multimeter and for signal faults and oscilloscope is pretty much essential as well.

Lets stick with the simple stuff for now though and see if you can at least pin the fault down to preamp or power sections 🙂
