This message is particularly for Tony Brady but others are welcome to respond. I found this forum, and a posting indicating that Mr. Brady was the original Onix designer, with a search engine. I am probably not competent to repair my Onix OA 20/2 amplifier myself. The CD input is dead, possibly because of a faulty selector switch (a previous owner messed with it). There may also be something wrong with the muting relay (if any) since I get a brief high pitched squeal when I activate the power switch (on or off). Otherwise the amp is still in mint condition and sounds fine. The issue is that I can't find either parts or repairs in North America. The three importers I found listed in old Audio directories are all either out of business or no help. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The muting relay is next to the selector switch. It is controlled by the muting circuit to stop thumps from the phono (disc) stage only. It also works as the tape input. It would be wise to change it anyway to an NEC MR62 24V as the contacts will be dirty by now.
It is normal to hear a small thump at switch on or off from the power amp stage but not a squeel, it may be that if the selector switch is broken, then you are hearing the sound of the phono stage switching on/ off. The selector switch is an Alps part but no longer available new - I'm sorry I don't have any either...

Thanks for your quick reply! I have not tested the phono input, but the tuner and tape inputs are both fine. The CD input does not seem to pass a signal, if you (carefully!) turn the volume up quite high you can just hear a slight hiss. So the problem seems to be before the amplification stages. I was just guessing about the selector switch, since the man I bought it from said he had "repaired" that part. It does seem a bit off in it's action: it rotates smoothly but the knob is not quite parallel to the case, as though the shaft has been bent a bit. However, the CD input issue could be something else entirely. The little squeal I mentioned is not a big thing, my completely non-technical analysis is that it sounds like some sort of component leakdown: changes pitch and goes away in maybe 2 seconds when turning the amp off. I realize that description is probably not much help. It's a shame about the ALPS switch, I was hoping that 1) this problem would be a known issue and 2) that it would be readily fixable. with the mains plug removed from the wall, remove the lid. At the back there are 2 fuse holders (speaker fuses). Remove the fuses and squeeze the clips together and then re-install the fuses - this might stop the squeel...

Well thanks again for thinking about it, but the amp is gone. It was an EBAY purchase and the clock was ticking, so I returned it. The fact that the selector switch (most likely culprit) was no longer available blew the whole thing up for me. As a dealer I spoke to about the problem said: for want of a nail... I do appreciate your willingness to respond and try and help out: thanks!

Is there someone who knows where i can get a MM Card. Or if to expensive any Info about the price of the system when it was new.

I took a chance on an ONIX OA20/2 for parts or repair on ebay. The seller did not know its problems. I have always wanted a brittish integrated, so I bit on the auction.
I got it for a pretty low price and I am hoping to be able to resurrect it. It won't be a great loss if I cannot.
Does anyone know the speaker fuse values? Is there a place where I might get a manual or schematic?
I am not too hopeful for for much help considering the age of this unit, but if anyone is out there that can help I would greatly appreciate it.

I fired up the Onix OA20/2
First I cleaned the volume pot and the internals of the switching mechanism as best I could with pro-gold.
When I powered up...
-No fuses blew
-Only one channel works, and that only on the tuner circuit
-The Disc (phono) outputs, but I used an Ipod to test it, so the sound - still one channel - was distorted
-The CD circuit hisses at high gain, but no music, either channel
-Tape-in outputs on the one channel, but faintly and distorted at full gain.
With the case open the RCA jack assemblies are covered with glue on the inside of the unit; not where the plug goes, but on the back of the jack itself.
Does anybody know if that is normal?
I have seen some circuit parts glued (tiny pots on the board)before, but never jacks. The glue job looks like glue from a hot glue gun and it was not applied uniformly or very neatly. I think these units were hand assembled, so if the glue is part of the assembly, that might explain that.
Also the cover to the mute circuit, along side the source selector switch is missing. This circuit seems to be working.
If any of you reading this have any suggestions, please offer them. I really want to get this little amp singing again.

Onix OA 20/2 on off switch
I have an onix amp and the power knob broke off - is there a way to replace this part in it's entirety? Or hardwire it and use outlet to turn on and off?

This is i suppose aimed at Tony. I have an early Onix OA21 amp which is working fine apart from a huge thump on power up. On power down i hear a relay working..On looking inside i see a row of three red relays, obviously one or two of the three have failed! Any help would be most gratefully recieved. I have managed to source replacements if it is a relay problem.
