On-Wall Open Baffle Design

Xmax meaning driver extension - movement range? Large extensions in a full range seems to be a contradiction of sorts. All the time its moving 5 cm back and forth and emitting the higher frequencies all the time, from different positions in space. Sounds like a disaster. Just my 2 cents. Of course we will have to see the measurements.

Not 5 cm - only 5 mm. A better solution i guess is a dedicated woofer, and a full range = FAST (full range and subwoofer technology)

Final Arrangement

I now have decided to place the speakers on the rear wall, about 60 cm from the sides and about 15 cm away from the rear wall. It will be about 1.5 metres from the floor.

The most important thing is having the speakers at ear level so that most of the direct sound can reach the ears of the listener, these things are not very good off axis.

Finished and testing

OK so it is finished. Testing revealed the following: (Tested on desk about 30 cm from rear wall, and in livning room inside a cabinet partition.)

PC speaker Amp:

Pros
Incredible detail, heard sounds never heard before on familair tracks
Good clarity
Good tonal balance

Cons
Lack of bass, equalizer did not help

Sony ES - Receiver (see my equipment)

Pros:
Decent all round sound
Acceptable bass

Cons
Less definition and clarity.

Conclusion: add a subwoofer later on, for now try to develop speakers with more bass.

Can I suggest you look into Omnidirectional loudspeakers, they may suit your listening space much better.

10 feet by 12 feet x Height ? is approximating a cube. Acoustically .....boomy bass.

Omnidirectional loudspeakers can be a very nice alternative, particularly if you are on a budget.

Like this one?

Omnidirectional speakers

But it will have to be DIY, must look for plans. Actually it will do nicely wall mounted. Main problem is getting the bass right.

With the room measurements you have provided there will be a huge room resonance around 50 - 56 c/s which will dominate any bass response you might achieve. The room is a big box. Open baffle bass is best able to deal with that problem far better than any bass driver in a box, but then that requires a very large baffle with a big driver (15") with high sensitivity to do that.

Omnidirectional loudspeakers do need some spacing from the walls too as do O.B designs but Omnidirectional designs can be more compact. It is all about trade-offs and what you can live with, that is within the bounds of W.A.F.
