Many smaller sets were designed to run 10~20 mA. I wouldn't temp fate until the factory values are known. The difference in sound quality is normally nil.

The was a semiconductor device called a varistor. Not the clamping devices you see today. Japanese numbering included the VD xxxx series (VD1212 is one popular part). They looked like a fine wire with a coloured bead in the middle, a dot normally at one end. Sony and others used them for bias in the STR-V2,3 ... series receivers. That was a "U" terminal with a glob on it and two wires coming out. Marantz 22xx series receivers had avariation in packaging. A black rectangle with a "U" cut into it and a pair of wires coming out.
