dumb question: what are those four segments between the mounting holes....they are hard....for a moment I thought it was gasketing material and speakers are mounted inside.
It's a good question because ideally gasket segments should extend around the mounting holes to prevent air leaks when rear mounting.
I think the drivers are intended for front mounting and it may be that the four hard segments are purely decorative - although they may provide additional support to the glued down fabric surround.

They do look like they are holding the fabric surround. Also clearly front mount!I think the drivers are intended for front mounting and it may be that the four hard segments are purely decorative - although they may provide additional support to the glued down fabric surround.
The speakers would look unfinished without those four segments.
They hide the unattractive glue joint between the black fabric and the gold coloured basket.

Yes, I would also guess those four sections are integral to the glued structure of the surround...That said, fortunately the backside edge is fully designed to mount the driver from the front with an even surface , some drivers are not well designed & mounting them from the front, they seem to give you very little or no surface area to work with.

The Visaton FR 10 you illustrate above is intended to be rear mounted such that the protruding annular gasket fits snuggly inside the mounting hole.
That is, the driver is 'plugged into' the 100 mm diameter cut-out in the box from behind.
That "plugged in" effect from the backside gives one the advantage of radiusing the opening, the thickness of the wood determining the radius value....just be sure to have that small 4-5 millimeter lip of the annular gasket. This woodworking gets you an esthetic look and a bit of a horn/waveguide.
