Ok, i can't decide which to build. I have a really nice unused Dukane starfire 4030. and the first lcd i took apart was a samsung and was pretty easy but i accidently broke it right after i had it working.
then the next lcd, i tore the flimsy circuit flappy things on the side because of all the foil paper.
ok third lcd was a philips and is impossible to use on OHP due to ffc.
Ok, i put it back together and it still works.
should i just build a box reflection projector? and if so, where can i find plans on how to build it? the fresnel lense from my dukane fits my 15 inch lcd perfectly so i could use that right? but i need other parts too like the final lense that i don't even know what you guys call it.
school me on your advice.......

oh, first of all, am understanding this correctly that the projector boxes you guys are building don't require the backlight to be removed, right?
or do they need light passing THROUGH the LCD panel as well?
or do they need light passing THROUGH the LCD panel as well?
yes you will need to remove the back light of a lcd in order to use it in this project. since we are makeing our own light source the light needs to pass threw the lcd
oh, so i was incorrect.
for some reason i thought you guys only reflected the image of the lcd, not the light.
see, when people posted sentences like. "this lcd is not usable for OHP" i thought they were implying that you could use it for the box type projectors you guys are making.
why did they word it like this. so an lcd is either usable for projecting or not.
SO IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU'RE BUILDING AN OHP OR A BOX TYPE PROJECTOR, YOU STILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE BACKLIGHT FROM LCD?

yes see no matter what youre gunna use a diff light because the backlights are not even close to bright enough so you dismantle a lcd so light can passthrew it and build a frame and set it on a OHP but you will have cooling problems. it will get very hot. now on why they say a lcd is not useable for this project is if there are problems dismantleing it or if there are ffc problems like ... there very short now you can buy extenders for that so they are usable ... just harder to use the ffc are very easy to break and connect the controler boards to the lcd. now here is some links to my first attempt

that was my first attempt my cat jumped on the lcd and broke it ...
so i went and got a sharp qa-1800 on ebay got it for $120 and it was like brand new still in box with everything does 800x600 plus it has rca imputs for xbox or dvd player i really like it but i am still planing on useing another monitor and building an actual bo. for light im useing a old OHP and am planning on getting a metal halide setup later i think it is good experience to use a OHP first and then build a box with youre own custom light later after you get the basic idea

http://www.diyaudio.com/wiki/index.php?page=Video here is a link to many many pictures of diff projectors you will get some good ideas from there ... granted its all in french but you can use babelfish to translate.
ok, thanks for the replies guys.
I'm gonna sell the lcd that i have for one that is diy friendly and no ffc problems.
in the meantime, i'm thinking about building a box instead of using my dukane.
I can use the fresnel lenses from my dukane. the starfire dukane i have is perfect size fresnels for a 15 inch lcd.
who has good plans on how to build it? should i pay the 20 bucks to lumen labs?

cool. you guys rock.
so i can contribute something i'm gonna take pictures and make a step by step process.
Maybe i'll do a before and after shot of how the dukane starfire 4030 setup with lcd on overhead looks. then build my box and compare it.
is building a box better because you use more of the light from escaping? and it's more easier to install and looks less ugly than OHP?

well the down fall to useing OHP is there is alot of light escaping and there not that bright... but they are easy to setup and cheap.
now if you build a box building the box is the easy part but the light setup is kinda expensive... atleast for me a light setup i think the 250 watt hqi kit is 159.99 now the plus to that is its much much brighter than any OHP bulb plus it last tons longer ... but its pricey...then u gatta figure in cooling to youre box you can use 12v DC fans or computer fans and use a computer power supply then you can get a lense kit from diyprojector company for 70 bucks witch aint bad so there 160 plus 70 plus 2 or 4 fans ... another 50 bucks depending on size and power sourceso theres like 280 roughly and thats not even including the lcd ... i got 120 into my sharp qa1800 and 10 bucks for my old buhl model 80 OHP and thats it now i am gunna order a 80mm triplet $29 to put in the OHP and maybe a fresnel will see now with my OHP the bulb is 11.95 locally and supposed to last 75 hours but its lasted much longer than that already it is a 600 watt bulb so it is very hott and even if it 4000 lumens witch i dought it is you only get *roughlly* 10% of that to the wall witch is very little i dont know what lumens my bulb is but i mostly use it for games and movies at night ... so its ok but for dark movies it kinda sux ...

Ok, how come i see some people using TWO fresnel lenses and some only use one.
a fresnel lense is to disperse the light evenly so that the projected image is evenly bright? right?
so why would you need two fresnel lenses?
even after looking at plans i'm still a little confused, but i'm learning!!!

ok if u use one fresnel lense yer gunna put it between the light and the lcd it will gather light then focuses threw youre lcd to the projection lense. here is a link to a picture of that.

and here is what useing 2 look like it makes the lcd even more evenly lit i just changed the other picture a bit witch i got off of diyprojector company site ( sorry alan )

hope that clears it up a little

ok cool. again.......... thanks for all your help.
i'm definitely gonna build the box setup now.
one thing i'm not sure about though, is that at first i was thinking of using all the parts from my Dukane starfire including the projection lense.
but then i thought maybe i have to get a different lense because maybe the height from the ohp surface needs to be maintained or i won't be picking up the whole 15inch display.
(they leave alot of room so you can put your arms and write on the OHP surface)
do you know what i mean? i can use the same lense, but i'll have the make the same distance so my box will be pretty large. which is ok and will be better than regual OHP style.

ok you are worried about the distance of the lense from the lcd ?
that is adjustable thats ... basicaly how you focus so when you build youre box you will have to make the lense adjustable so you can focus youre image if youre lense wasnt adjustable you would have to move the projector forward and backward to focus it. the only problem with useing parts off of the OHP is its fresnel really isnt the right size for a 15 inch lcd if you get the right size of fresnel you will have a brighter more evenly lit lcd that and i would buy a 80 mm triplet to use instead of the lense from youre OHP

ok, i mind as well use the best stuff i can buy.
now the fresnel lense is 15.1 inches diagonal... ( i had to dremel out the black encasing plastic and make a 15 inch lcd fit right.
anways, i will post my process in a week when i get the new parts. ( need a DIY friendly lcd, thinking about the viewsonic V150.)
new fresnel since mine is dirty/scratched, and the new projector lense...) etc.
probably should buy some spare ffc extension cables.

ok i have the viewsonic vg150 and it could be used but i would not recomend it due to the placement of the controler boards and ffc cable the ffc cable really isnt the problems its the other cable and the angle at that it connects to the lcd is terrable i would avoid this lcd unless you can get it very very cheap. but i am also looking for one .... only because i already have the controler boards for it ...
