Ok, one more question, then I promise to go away and DIY a projector

Assume I have a LCD PC monitor with a DVI input, and that the native resolution is 1280x1024. Assume I buy a source that can output a 16:9 ratio 720p signal through a DVI connector. Assume I hook this source to my LCD monitor. What will happen?

1. The LCD will display the image pixel for pixel, 1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels high. There will be black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

2. The LCD will attempt to stretch the image to fit the screen.

3. It depends on the LCD controller, anything could happen!

4. Nothing will happen, an LCD monitor won't accept a DVI input unless the signal is output from a PC video card.

If choice 1 is correct, I think I may order this LCD Monitor. All of the specs seem right -- good contrast, lots of colors, ultra-fast response time, DVI input, and around $200. The only disadvtage is that it's 17", but I after some reading on DIY projector company's website I think that will work anyway.

If the above won't work, this Viewsonic certainly will, as it says right in the specs it is 720p compliant and has sync on green. However, it costs twice as much as the previous LCD, its MSRP is $400.

Thanks for all the help ladies and gentlemen. If this works out I hope to be playing a xbox 360 on a 100" screen at 720p this winter :clown:

Walmart -- strangely enough that's where I found the LCD monitor I want to use. I found out that the xbox 360 will not support digital output, but rather VGA and component. Therefore, a DVI connector is no longer a requirement for me.

12 ms response time
Sync-on-green for component -> VGA inputs
500:1 contrast ratio

The LCD will cost under $265 shipped to my front door. Walmart's loose return policy will work to my advantage. If my LCD has a lot of dead pixels in bad locations I can return it to my local WalMart, no questions asked 🙂

There is the disadvantage of this being a 17" screen, but I think I can live with that if the image isn't too poor towards the edges. If the image is poor towards the edges due to fresnel issues, I'll have to join a group buy on the 15.4" WUXGA LCD 🙂

Thanks for your input Guy. Results from my attempted stripping and projector project will be posted whenever they are completed, hopefully before Christmas.
