opaque projectors for DIY LCD projector

I really don't think that would work. Even the most efficient LCD panels transmit only 10% of the light that enters the LCD. In an opaque projector, the light enters from the top of the LCD, reflects off of a mirror or white diffuser, then passes through the LCD again before being shot out of the projection tube. If my thinking is correct, this means that you'd be getting an image that is less than 1/100 of the lumens that the light source is capable of. This is made worse by the fact that most diffusers absorb some of the light that hits them, even if the diffuser is perfectly white.

I hate to give bad news like that, but I've had a couple of people tell me about their experiences with opaque projectors, and they never turn out well. I think there is an old DIY LCD projector webpage that has hand drawn plans for this style of projector that involves simply shining light somewhere on the LCD panel from the front side. A lot of people have seen that and think that it would work, but it really won't for many reasons, but I won't go into them unless someone is interested.
