Can anyone reccomend a good OHP? Do some projectors come ready to take MH bulbs or do you need to convert them?
Lots of people have OHP's. Problem is that nobody wan't to answer some stupid question that you could find by searching on Google.
if you allow me, i can give you my idea
I have a dukane 4003 (identical to the infocus 410)
it gives out more then 4300 lumes
has 2 light bulbs on board, that you can use with a sliding switch for alternate use of just untill one dies.
The system itself is very COMPACT!!!! NOT bulky at all.
Quiet fan allthough, if this one fails , i am going to install some Enermax type
the lenses are impecable and all vital glass and mirrors are easy to clean.
it has an extra outlet built in for a panel and allthough it says 1.5Amp max, i use the outlet for the powersupply of the panel, wich takes out about 1.9 amps.
the only disadvantage is see in the projector is when you tilt the fresnel, it is held by a small chain so it won't fall out. that chain seems very fragile and the way it is connected to the body seems to have been the task of a Korean car engineer which name escapes me. i paid about $60 for it and could not have been more satisfied for this money! the projector arrived with 2 Brand New bulbs in it! i have only used one of them yet and have surpassed the original 50 hrs life expectancy, i think i have had it on for about 20 movies and some 20 NFL games as well as some intense playstation gaming so i would say about 150 hrs.
the room gets a bit warmer trhough the projector but the panel on top of the fresnel stays cool. I guess that's the proof that the construction is neat. ofcourse they cheated a bit: the mirror inside the projector does not really stay inside but comes out at the bottom, creating more space to let cool air in. result is that light 'leaks out of it. something you have to try to confine some way.

See what I mean. You have no idea in the wide world how to stop being negative. No wonder I kicked you out of the LCD panel thread.
Saket asked a perfectly reasonable question and you had to tell him he asked a stupid question.
Ok he could have looked in Google. Whats the point of having a DIY forum if we tell everyone who asks a reasonable question to **** off and look in Google.
All you have to do is look at Uvodee's helpful responce and your dumb responce to see who is the stupid one.

search function
the negative people also need to take a long look at the search function...It doesnt give you links to posts, it just gives you links to threads.
if someone was to search for "metal halide" and "overhead projector"..then they would see that both the ENTIRE "DIY Video Projector" and "DIY Video Projector II" threads contain the strings "metal halide," and "overhead projector".
What is he supposed to do? Try to show the entire thread in the printable version and then import the raw text into some other program which will search individual posts for multiple terms?
Some of these guys may not be quite as technically savvy as you must be, with your amazingly efficient use of the search function.
Please.
Its a forum. People LIKE to talk about this stuff...thats why many hang out here.
If you dont have anything positive to say, does it do you any harm to just not interject your opinion?

WTF are you talking about? You didn't kick me out of anything. I chose not to discuss anything with you in there. Your the one with the f-ed up attitude. That was a lazy a-hole question he asked and I'm tired seeing that crap on here. Worse more, there was no need to start a new thread because there are 50 MH threads plainly in sight. Uvodee felt like helping him and that's cool, but don't give me crap for not liking his question. Frankly, I'm getting tired of your arrogance.
Searching the forum
A suggestion for those having trouble searching the forum: If you chose the button "Show Results as Posts" in the search options section, it will show you individual posts rather than entire threads. It also helps to change "Search all open forums" to "Video" only. I'm sure some of you already have this knowledge, but there may be others that don't and this could be causing some frustration. 🙂 As for the rest of the "negative" aspects that are in this thread, it takes up just as much space and time to read negative feedback as it does to post "lazy" questions. 😉 All of us are coming to this project at different points in our searching, those who are just now finding it are naturally going to have "silly" questions that we have ALL asked before. I'm glad people had the patience when I joined the forum, I was (and still am) full of those type questions. My advise to the newbies is that if no one is answering you question it may be because 1) They don't have the answer you're looking for, or 2) It's a question that has been answered to death and the information is available already on the forum waiting for you to search it out. My advise for those experienced with the forum; If you think its a silly question and the person who asked it has obviously not searched first.....don't respond. Why waste more space? There's my two-bits worth, and thats about how much its worth! 😀

lifter, if you are tired or reading it....
when are you gonna get tired of replying?
You dont have to read it...
I mean, Im not standing right there in your room but i am pretty sure no one is holding a gun to your head.
why dont you just be like everyone else, and take part in the stuff you are interested in, and not take part in the stuff you arent?

Dead right
Questions are the lifeblood of forums like this. New guys come here and it takes a while to read the information and settle in. Nothing wrong with asking a question even if its already been answered. Its not a crime. Either dont answer or try and point a guy in the right direction. But saying someone asks a stupid question is just plain rude. I know its not Lifters normal way because I have seen him answer guys questions before. My suggestion is we can have a crack at answering new guy questions and if we take it in turns no one person gets tired of it.
Search function as Smoke Eater says select "show as posts" will isolate the posts and also there is a trick you can use.
Say you are looking for information on metal halide lights.
Put this on the search line
metal and halide and lights
Then the search engine will find posts that contains all three words metal, halide, lights.
Another example could be searching for parabolic reflectors
parabolic and reflectors
The and is a connecting word (technical jargon and is a bolean operator) and it forces the search engine to show posts that contain all the words connected by and.
A new guy could read the very helpful FAQ which is right there at the top, or search for .....lcd and projector....... which will bring up a lot of posts. Good stuff in the threads to get anyone started

For every 40 BS questions I read here, I ignore 39. Sometimes I get annoyed and I don't feel like keeping quiet about it. It's not like I'm flaming every newbie here. And I've contributed and answered a lot of newbie's questions here. The admis make a big point about recycled newbie questions. In fact, I've never seen a forum that requires you to check a box to confirm you've searched for something first. Anyone here who doesn't bother to read the FAQ and asks a question like "is there such thing as OHP's with MH bulbs?" is an a-hole and deserves to get flamed. When it comes to people like that, yes, I am negative. His other question was, "has anyone replaced an OHP lamp w/ a MH bulb?". WTF is this thread:
A Little Help with Retrofitting a OHP?
or this one:
Cannibalized OHP?
Those are both new threads on page 1 of the forum. No reason for this one. But I'll stop being so "negative" about it and shut up. I'm done.

If you actually took the time to read the post you would have realized that I was asking for a reccomendation of a good OHP projector not just in general but for LCD puposes. I also know people have retrofitted them with MH bulbs but I could find anywhere here whether they actually came stock with them. I didn't know the search separated results into posts though that is a good idea. There is a thread reccomending panels ie (good panel / bad panel) whats wrong with one reccomending OHP. In my opinion my post was no more of a newbie post than that one. Lifter go find some teenager board if your going to bitch about other peoples posts. Maybe there you can throw around your elitist attitude. The questions you stated you obviously just made up because those were not even close to the questions I asked. Thank you to those who actually responded in suggesting an OHP projector for me.
My first PJ used an Elmo HP-A305SD. It has 7300 lumens and is probably about the brightest OHP you can get. They are still selling for $150 plus on ebay. A few months back, I bought a CRT projector and I think my OHP and LCD panel are sold. The downside to this PJ is bulb cost of $149.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. My site still has pictures of my LCD/OHP stuff until I update it in a few weeks.

Hello Lifter,
Let me start with this quote: ". Anyone here who doesn't bother to read the FAQ and asks a question like "is there such thing as OHP's with MH bulbs?" is an a-hole and deserves to get flamed. "
and now let me state that this is false. Think about it. The people asking these questions are asking them because they could not find the answer or honestly might not have looked around for it. Now theres a simple solution to this. You can either ignore the question, or you can answer by telling them that there is a ton of usefull information on "said topic" in "said thread".
You pushing people around does not contribute to the diyaudio environment. It only makes others fear asking questions because they know someone will put them down. Put yourself in their shoes and think about it.
I'm asking very kindly, please just help the others out. If a question is recycled, it might actually get an original answer from someone which might trigger a thought from someone else and so on and so forth
Thanks Lifter 🙂

on the fence
I can sort of see where some frustration exists in the forum I think. There does seem to be a lot of "surplus threads" I think it actually adds to the confussion that "newbies" face, heck I find it difficult to keep track of the "new information" threads that keep popping up on what is actually "old information" When I joined I knew what I wanted allmost precisely....no idea how to get it...or if it existed.
So I ignored the OHP threads and the OHP panel threads...basically all the threads that didnt relate to bare LCD panel's of the laptop variety. I read the other threads (I think allmost all of them to exhaustion) but did not "follow" them.
Now I have a much better idea as to how and why my build will be one way or another I look to the threads again, does anyone have access to site statistics? Because I think there are a whole bunch of new threads since I joined. And a lot of them are covered with precision allready, some I think the originators might have moved on...so the original content is stale possibly. If the content is stale it's our fault, it's our fault for not cleaning up.
The way I see it on cleanup is we either have to cleanup the "vintage content" where a lot of thought process has allready taken place ( a serious disservice to those that came here before us and broke the ground ) or we have to cleanup the "new content" where the thought process is just a glimmer maybe.
I've been a little overboard on a newbie that started a "dead thread" so I can see how it can happen. So I've taken a closer look at how and why it happened. Here's my take on it. I spent HOURS sifting this forum, I have the time to read it... a lot of people dont. I had the time to gather enough information to confuse myself thuroughly...then allmost sort it all out (allmost)
Now I come to the forum eager for a new thread...surprise! here's a new thread....maybe it's the ellusive piece to the puzzle of the moment...Doh! lunch bag let down! it's just another old rehash, and it doesnt look particularly well thought out not even well plagerized.
Dont get me wrong "great sollutions" are often built on the backs of "great failures", but if we dont celebrate our sucess's or mourn our losses in the right place's all of them become lesser in "visible" value. The forum is a big scary place, if we can keep the bloat's down it will only be scary 😉
Maybe a "polling station" for new threads where the thread idea is first broached. Then the forum members/mods could vote it up or down or send the poster where he needs to go. Perhaps a "help the newbie thread" where the old timers can point the way and if you are a new member and havent met a minimum "in thread post count" you dont have the abillity to make a new thread "access verboten"
I hope we can solve this because I think it's a problem that is destined to grow, and this forum is the best I've found in a long long time by way of "creative thought".
enough of my rambling for now

i think the way things are working now are fine, however slow...
it takes a while to send threads to the back of the list, but as soon as people lose interest and stop posting to them they will go away... as long as there is still interest, then there is no problem with the thread being bumped, even if the information is still old news.
since this is a characteristic of most forums, i have just sort of gotten used to it...
I never tried to think of a solution to speed things up though...
i also think having the old information rehashed and recycled into new threads over and over and over and over and over so that the same base of information is always on the front page with the exception of some new information at all times doesnt really put us guys off who have been here for a while, but I think it gives alot of newbies (the posters of these threads) a chance to get helped, and while that may be a little irritating to the rest of us (including myself), there are many other lurking newbies getting their questions answered at the same time...
It seems more accessible to new people to just read all the threads on the front page, than to sift through some of the older threads...but they will still get the same old information...
so...
All i do when i dont feel like reading every single post (which i usually do) is just follow threads that i am interested in, and new ones with topics which look interesting.
I am beginning to think i made this post too long, and i lost my point some place in the middle, hopefully it will make sense to someone and not just be a waste of space...which is more than likely is. sorry!

Your website was really informative, and it got me really wanting to build my own projector. I was just wondering what you were planning on doing with your Nview panels???

Rekr,
A fellow in Canada contacted me about them over a month ago. He agreed to buy both pieces including the TV3000 and they are all packaged. I'm still waiting on the money though. I really liked the Z115 much better than the Spectra and the Elmo HP-A305 Solar Deluxe is like the sun. I'll let you know if this falls through.
