Well i'm upgrading my card board project up to a OHP with a lcd panel or screen. well for starters I have a lcd monitor ripped apart and all set on the overhead only prob is theirs no vertical resize so the image is off, and I basically have the fcc cable ducted taped, so now what I'm woundering what are some good LCD Panels the ones that are made to go on a Overhead, what are some of the better ones for around say 50-100 bucks want to have a good quality so i can hook up my xbox 360 up to it, anything is better then this 19inch 1970 tv i have. I found this website to be very helpful…

From my experience, the higher the resolution the more features they usually have and the better off you are. An active matrix LCD is a must. More colors are better than less, 16.7 million being the highest. Nview & Proxima seem to be popular and Sharp is the king of projector panels.

I actually had two but I listed them on a local internet classified ad and the same person bought them both, yesterday of all days. Sorry :-( Check your local school/University surplus. That is where I purchesed all of mine from. Good luck I hope that website helped you.

I have compiled some info on some panels that I have used Proxima , Sharp ,etc. . In my latest project I stripped a 14" lcd panel and reconfigured the original monitor frame to create a modern Projection panel. The 14" is about 1/2" wider than the OHP stage on both sides ,so I masked it off and it works great. You can see some pictures and specifications for these panels here

I also have the opportunity to also pick up an ASK Campus 700 - but it does not come with a remote. Is it functional without the remote, or should I pass on it??
Darnitall - it's hard to find a good panel.

It needs the remote to function!! I would pass on it if there is not a remote.

Cooling with a custom Designed Case
I am very impressed with your mod. and want to build one for me too. But i have a concern with the cooling. Please correct me if i am wrong, but imho, Since you are using two glass panels, it will cause a green house effect and thus eventually raise the temperature to a much higher value.
I have a 7300 lumen elmo and its reaching 96 degrees at the center of the screen (screen showing a black wallpaper) with a powerful office fan at full speed.
While doing my temperature tests, the screen was completely black( as it absorbs the most heat),I noticed that the temperature difference between the center(3mm by 3mm spot) and the edges of the screen can be 8-10 degrees. I think this may be due to the focus of the fresnel lense. The readings were made using an infrared thermometer.
can you please verify your readings at the center ,also ill be happy if you could give me some sugesstions on cooling the lcd

Hi, you don't need to buy a new LCD or a projection panel. you may still be able to use your existing LCD. All you need to do is download a Software called power strip http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm
This software will allow you to resize the image on your LCD and use custom resolutions. However Some graphic cards may not support it. So good luck & let me know if it worked!

007,
Do you have the LCD laying directly on the stage of the OHP? If you do then try raising it up a 1/2" or so to allow airflow around the bottom of the lcd. Bigger isn't always better. Try using a smaller fan that will be more focused on the bottom of the LCD where more of the heat is.
I haven't noticed any green house effect at all. Regular projection panels use glass on the top and bottom. I think it creates a more efficient flow of air around the LCD. It actually creates a "wind tunnel" effect that maximizes the cooling of the panel. Here is a drawing of the side view of my panel I retro-fitted. You can see that no air is wasted and all of it is directed to remove any heat away from the panel.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
