OHP Fresnel, or Page Magnifyer??

Well guys & gals....jesus' projector is under way.

I just came across http://www.mdc.nicsystems.com
sweet design.

Here's what I'm equipped with:
3M 6100 Series LCD Panel
Older 3m OHP (I MELTED THE FRESNEL!! ):bawling:
400w Sylvania MH Bulb
m59 ballast/cap
ceramic mogul base

Ok. I melted the fresnel by dicking around....trying to conduct a very loosly controlled experiment.
(putting the 400w MH bulb inside the OHP....turned it on....bulb touched the fresnel = melted fresnel)
DOH!!!

So now I have disassembled my 3M 6100, and pulled the LCD.
It measures approximately 7x9 inches.
Now I purchased 3 sets of those page magnifyers from www.myimax.com
DOH!

I am wondering....would these page magnifiers work fine (perhaps with one on each side of the lcd?)?
Or should i go with something a little more solid, such as an OHP fresnel?

As for the design found at http://www.mdc.nicsystems.com,
would that mirror provide an adequate reflector, to direct the light through the LCD?
I would think this idea to be near perfect, as you could control where the light is shining.
But, then again...i'm just a n00b, & this is my first time around....which is why i'm POSTING! ha!

Anyway....let me know what you guys think...i appreciate the feedback.

OK sorry to hear about the fresnell that stinks, But On to another more important topic, go to that site thats linked above...............damn those are some good looking screen shots man if a tv and fresnell looks that good Im gonna ditch the whole LCD projector Idea all togeather LMAO. Seriously tho look at the pics its like looking at a actual crt tv directly and as for the pic where the guy is standing in front of the screen look at the shadows, they go down so the video source was higher then he was( ie cealing) man it must have been hard work to mount the tv box up that high, or is it that with the amount ofmoney hes scamming off people he bought a lcd projector seriously this makes me mad such shisters in the world. I will attach the pic I was talking about, and Im gonna email him for more pics with people in the picture and a pic of his actual product hes using for the pics LOL we shall see Such a tird:mafioso:

I'm so skeptical about that.. I tried to search the web for reviews but couldn't find anything about this "Max theater" deal. I took the above screenshot as well as another from their webpage.. to see if the guy standing in front was just "photoshopped" in front or something. The video does distort on him.. which could be real or not.. but the weird thing that strikes me is..

That still frame of Denzel.. and the one with the guy in front of it, the screens don't match. If you look in the one without the guy in it.. there's a lot more to the screen than is shown.. which means that one of the pictures isnt real.

The frame without the dudel has an approximate ratio of 1.8:1.. while the one with him is 2:1 since the bottom part of the screen is cut off.

Now this is all just from quickly lookin at the pics for about 5 mins.. I might have overlooked something.. but really the only way to know is to try it..

Does the screen look like it's too high resolution too?

Beats me

Don't fall for the fresnel and tv deal. One guy who was selling plans and a fresnel stole pictures from a group members LCD projector web site and used it in his ads on ebay...

The problem is brightness, the CRT's just don't put out enough light.

OK I emailed them and we will see how they respond............................., on a unrelated Subject UPS really chaps my A$$. I had a panel shipped to me( brother found it) and it arrived with a ding in the hard case and when I opened it up everything looked ok But Something is/was rattling around inside, So UPS picked it up and sent it back to the shipper and they said that they( the shipper) and the seller looked it over and found nothing rattling around, Now I know as God as my witness there was something broke in the panel and it dosent work( it happened to be a sharp qa-1800) so The seller is supposed to contact me today If they refuse to refund My money I guess I will just have to tell the Credait card company that the seller sold me a broke Item in the intention of fraud and Im not paying for it. UPS you buy insurance and when the bastards drop the Item they wont pay( they have a Internal claim dept for FREAKIN sake) thats a little skewed if you ask me, IM done with UPS such shisters. anyways thats my rant for all the Shisty bastards in the world :mafioso:

I already DID lose my money from those guys! It's OK! I hope nobody else falls for the same scam!
But, with the fresnels that I DID recieve.....I am wondering if an OHP fresnel would be a better route to go, than the "page magnifiers" I recieved from them.
Or if the "page magnifiers" would be ok, because they do fit the entire size of the lcd...but is there a difference in magnification quality between the two?
Also....how far away should the lcd be from the fresnel? The LCD itself is about 6 1/2" x 8 1/4 "
the "page magnifiers" are about 7" x 10". Would these work? How far away should i put the fresnels? I was thinking one on each side of the LCD (i'll get some pics up here soon). Maybe 2nite, or 2morrow i'll try the same sort of test Akeem did (with the paper)....
Any suggestions?

Ok...apparently nobody understands what i'm trying to say here.....

I dont care or not if it's a scam.....

I want to know if the small "page magnifying" fresnels will work with my LCD panel?!

Does anybody have an opinion on this? IS there a difference between these & an OHP fresnel??

The OHP fresnels are clearer and of better quality. I would suggest trying by buying two cheap page magnifiers at staples for ~7 each, and seeing if it works for you. If not, swap them out for an OHP fresnel and use them for a solar cigarette lighter.

lol @ bigtinker
ok well i could start with frensels but im not going to cos its going to cause a stir lol but i have found out quite a few things and im so suprised manny of u havnt realised of a ohp frensels properties to a page mag's properties, in simpler words a page mag will give u a more intense brighter light, a ohp frensel more dull an diffused light, why? cos a ohp frensel has more rings that not only diffuse light but also bend rays to stray angles and the thickness absorbs alot of light! a page mag is brighter cos its thin thus not absorbing much light, it has fewer rings so there is less light getting wased gettting bent at right angles out of the side and the light is more intense hence the lesser rings. Now as i said im not going to into this but a page mag is not good for a ohp, why u may ask? just have a look at the angle the light has to bend in a ohp from the source it is too much for the lesser rings that need to capture and rebend the light at a straiter angle, u can try the page mag if u want but your corners will be dimer than a ohp frensel.

Ok for those who are going to post ahhh the page mags are crap cos opf the lesser rings and the rings on the screen, hm not so, i need to have it atleast 1" away from the screen i find 2" is best that way making the page mag out of focus to the projection lens and u will have just the lcd infocus.

Ive been fooling around on this subject a while now in the way why a 49000lm bulb in a ohp is so dim on the wall, the secret lies in your reflectors, light angles, and frensel

for an experiment take a varible beam torch and vary the beam from wide to narrow, what happends is when the light is wider its less bright , intense and less concentrated and that is what its like in a ohp from a point source, now if u use a larger burning arc the beam is at a lesser angle and therfore it is more concentrated and intense, that is why small lcds get a brighter image than a larger lcd, if u could scale up the light source size in a smaller lcd setup u would get the same resaults with a bigger screen ie: a 15inch lcd, bear in mind u will need a larger condenser and a larger reflector but its not that much bigger, another thing is the size of the projection lens the smaller the dimmer, the bigger the more light passes through!

Ace,

I see what you mean. For any light you have a fixed number of lumens. If you take those lumens and spread them out over a small surface, it will look brighter (bigger is dimmer). But what you didn't cover is focal length. An OHP lens with an 8 inch focal is better than an OHP with a 14 inch focal. This is because a fresnel only accepts light that travels from the focal point. Other light is reflected or absorbed. Light attenuates as it travels so the closer the better.

The page magnifiers have a much shorter focal, the ones I tried were about 6 inches. An OHP at the same focal length should be using a clearer plastic, and will probably perform better.

I realize this is an oversimplification, since I didn't discuss the number of rings, which is also important. I still stand behind my original statement, buy the cheapest you can and see if it works. If you are unhappy, upgrade. Most builders dismiss the page magnifiers offhand, for confirmation, just do a search. There are also a couple of really good threads on fresnels, explaining things in a lot of detail.

Just my 2 cents from my expereinces so far. I have 1 page magnifier, 1 14 in focal split fresnel, 2 20 in TV magnifiers, and a 8/10 in focal OHP lens which on the way. When I finish my case I will try each to get some real world data injected into the discussion...

thanks for the replies guys....that's what i was looking for. The only reason i'm asking this question, is because, like i said in my earlier post, i fried one of my OHP fresnels. So i took it apart & got one good OHP fresnel....one with a melted circle in the middle.

I've been trying to document everything i've been doing....taking pictures & such...but i need the cord to hook this digital camera to my computer so i can show you all!

I'll get pictures in here w/i the next couple days.
In my "tinkin around"...i found that the fresnel behind the LCD just intensifies the light shining through it....while the fresnel in front provides the actual magnification of the picture. (duh!)

Anyway, are there any specific measurements i need to be concerned about (ie. distance from fresnel #1 to LCD....distance from LCD to fresnel #2....etc)?
I was thinking about just staggering the fresnels in proportional distances from the LCD. What do u guys think about this? I was going to try 2" inch increments.....

yeah your right bigtinker but also there are many other factors, i think this is probally the wrong thread for it so ill leave it at that, having 2 different types of frensels is what u need when building somthing, in a ohp's case the frensel that u get with a ohp is made for the light and lens as a complete unit all matched, but what gets me is the amount of light u loose in a ohp when it projects somthing, but anyway ill leave it at that, the page mag works in things that are best for it and a ohp frensel will work in things that are best for it.Just trial and error.

Jesus u need to play around with your system cos there is no way we can tell u if it will work 100% in a way that it will cos it depends on a few things like focal lengths ect so u will need to play around with your ohp and come to terms with a conclusion.

happy diy
