Ohm Clone

Has anyone tried a full-range driver mounted upside down with a super tweeter ala the Ohm (Walsh) speakers? It doesn't appear that the ohm drivers are that special based on a casual inspection. Maybe that is why they go to such lengths to hide it in a canister under the top grille.

My idea is to try to clone the Ohm design with a full range driver (Audio Nirvana comes to mind) with an AMT tweeter crossed high around 8K. If it is a failure, I could just mount these drivers on an open baffle and still have good sound.

I like the Ohm sound but I think they are overpriced for the driver quality that you get. And the tweeter is weak IMO.

1. Yes.

2. More than a casual inspection is required. Fully disconnect one from all its protection and impedance correction components, run DATS or equiv(added mass for Vas will give you Mms so you'll have some idea of cone weight).
Measure FR in 'Walsh' orientation.

3. It's amusing but unfortunate when some random ferrous bit heads for the magnet, only to find a tweeter in its way.

Read the mamboni thread and the one on juspur's pensils(his sp). Pictures are mostly gone, but you'll figure out what they did(c2cthomas used a Heil tweeter).

The sensitivity of the ANs will help with the lack of baffle lift, should be interesting to see what that combination will do.

Have fun with it and let us know what it sounds like.
