People may want to check out this company who makes ultra bright backlights on the order of 5-10 times as bright as typical monitor\LCD backlights. It may also give you an idea of which panels to modify.

Awesome link... very interesting.
It appears that they are using regular CCFL tubes to light it up, only they are using 8 of them on a 10.4" display.
Wonder how hard this thing would be to copy? And I wonder if that is bright enough to get a decent picture at a decent size.
