So we got a kitten 4 weeks ago and have spent endless minutes using a squirter bottle everytime it went near my stereo.. It had gotten the message but of course today whilst I was out , my good lady got sidetracked, and kind of didnt see the calamity involving the Kitten, The German Sheperd and The Poodle (standard so it is big AND Stupid). Kitten apparently attempts jump onto turntable to evade playful dogs.. Lid is not hinged to mY TD125 so it must of hit the tonearm /cartridge on its way to meeting gravity by way of my tube amp.... Is it ok to be close to tears at 47 years of age?
So I got my 150mlx Audio Technica on the 24th of December last year and I am writing its obituary tonight..... cantilever broke clean off. When I bought it the Aussie dollar exchange rate was very good, unlike now (.64 USD to the AUD) and of course its price has nearly doubled from LP gear since I bought it.
The long and the short.. I am without vinyl capability as I sent my only spare to Ray (AT 440ML) in the states so Until he has sent it back I cant afford to fix the darn thing.. I am also worried the RB300 might be bent as it must have taken a whallop.
Why am I telling you this? I really hope its therapy as I am really upset and really angry.
God bless the pets but couldnt have they come out and said they didnt like my vinyl system before trashing it.
So as we know pets and stereos are not compatible.

Sorry to hear your story...
You could spend just a very little of your new spare time in building one of Nanook's 2 dollar unipivot tonearms. It can replace the Rega and free the Rega for a cash sale. The simple building will make you feel better and the cash may help you to rearange your phono system for the better.

Neither are cats and water bottles. It is cruel and, as you have discovered, largely ineffective. I say your TT deserves what it got in retribution.
Now, find a better way to keep the cat off (hint, cat's don't like citrus and will stay away from places that smell like it.)

opposite experience here.
as i sat down to listen, after puttin the vinyl on,
the cat walks over to the turntable (a cheep pioneer mid fi),
steps up to, and on, the speed control switch with his front
leg/paw, speeding the table to '45 rpm' .
steps on the switch again
with his back leg/paw restoring the speed to 33.3.
which got my Attention.
and then he
lays down right on the 'table/plastic cover.
the fact that he weighed about 12 pounds,
and had quite long hair, damped the 'table immensely.
Which removed alota noise from playback.

Honest to God , kittens can be a real trial for one's patience.
yet cats are may be the most spiritualy astute animal,
that waste their time with people.
the insanity that goes with kittens,
is more that worth while,
they are true friends as they get older,
as long as they are treated fairly.
treated fairly in Their opinon,
as animals aren't as full of 'Bull Stuff' as people.

I take exception to your sanctimonious accusation that squirting a little bit of water on a kitten that is 3 months old is cruel. I dont throw the water bottle at it thanks very much and it is an effective method of deterance. This is what Vets recommend and further more I lived with one for 2 years. Furthermore citrus is probably toxic and that is not something I would use.
Thank you so much for pointing out that the Karma gods have ,with glee punished me for my dispicable act of cruelty.
I will have you know sir that I care for my pets in a way few do, so I would ask you to keep your opinions on water and cruelty to yourself.
If you think You have offended me, you have, and if this was not a public forum I would really let you know just what I think of your "Holier than thou" judgement.
So dsavitsk keep your judgements for other people but I sir will not stand for it.
You got that?

Cats are not smart enough to make the logical connection between the squirt of water and behavior. They are, however, smart enough to make the logical connection between being squirted and the person squirting them. That is, squirting them simply makes them fearful.

Maybe this will be helpful for your problem
http://blogs.catster.com/cat_tip_of_the_day/2008/12/01/kitty-counter-surfing-time-for-a-booby-trap/
For the record, I didn't suggest feeding the cat citrus. That would indeed keep the cat away permanently. Just finding something that smells like it and putting it there will keep the cat away. Vinegar will work, too, but it will likely keep you away as well.

I feel your pain.
we ended up with 6 cats at our house. The newest is under 6 mos old, and needs to be spayed (or whatever they do to female cats...)
Youngest one has created almost all the problems: 2 of the younger males (and they are "fixed") began spraying and marking territory all over my front room, including the audio rig!
One of the oldest males (we have 2 old males, both been "fixed") began doing the same but to no effect (thankfully 'cause he's a big SOB.).
I use a 1/2 and 1/2 solution of vinegar and water.... All I have to do is catch them doing it and shake the squirt bottle and they stop and let out like no tomorrow.
I don't condone creating fear in pets, and usually if I verbally reprimand them they stop instantly.
As far as the arm goes, I've had a cat jump on my table whilst listening to it (I nodded off for a second). The $2.19 tonearm easily survived. And hey, it cost $2.19, so if it didn't , who cares?

Cat Fight Gentlemen 😀
Back to tonearms , so far it has been riveting .......@ 2.19 i think i could splurge a little and step up the 6 .00 version 🙂 the uni-pivot is the way to go and very doable with what has been laid out .. Bravo !

Nanook and others ....
I have noticed there is no anti-skating device on these arms....
DO you not need to have anti-skating ?
If not could you explain why , these uni-pivot designs don't need to have one , but a typical S-type has anti-skating......
How are you guys determining mass( weight ) at needle tip ?....

antiskating...
anti-skating can be adjusted by putting a "twist" into the tone arm wire leads exiting the arm. A more elegant solution is to make something as per Scheu , etc.a string, an arm (often threaded), something to hold the arm, and a point to tie the thread to.
The mass needs to include fasteners (often .5 grams). The tonearm mass can be measured, but it must be the sum of all moving parts (not including counter-weight). I calculated my arm to 7.5 grams effective mass w/o headshell...based on the manufacturer's specifications for the tubing that I used, and the actual length involved.

Sad news, I'm sorry to hear it. The Garrott Brothers in Australia rebuild cartridges, including replacement cantilevers. Depending on how it broke they may be able to fix yours. My (only) connection with them is that they rebuilt for me a Blue Point Special with a snapped cantilever - which had left me feeling rather like you do at the moment, except it was my own clumsiness that did it, which made me feel even worse; unlike me, kittens are cute. I'm very happy with the result.
The agent I went through was Decibel Hi-Fi and the service was good; prompt, good communication, and good prices. They're near Brisbane, which I realize isn't exactly close to you, but it is on the same side of the continent. 😀
Anyway, might be worth asking them about it. Good luck.

Watching all you vinyl freaks rushing together for a group hug is so touching. So romantic. It reminds me of something.
I was so affected; I almost forgot to remind you that this is JUST ONE of the reasons why the rest of us music-loving pet owners got rid of those ugly, black accident-magnets.

Hey guys. Look it is really no big deal as I can eventually get a new stylus when I can afford it.
What really troubles me is the mean spirited and nasty sentiments afforded by a few members.. One is an expert on cruelty to kittens apparently, heck .8mL of water is absolutely terrifying!! (This kitten incidentally sips water from this bottle thats how scared she is) and the other pats himself on the back for ditching his damage magnet. Not content with his smugness, we a condemned for being Vinyl freaks and group hugging... get a life man.
To both of you .. get some help and as I said keep your sentiments to yourself, there is no room here for your remarks and they reflect poorly on your personas.
If you want to split hairs on animal cruelty and if you are a meat eater why not go on down to this little doosey of a video called "meet your Meat"
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-513747926833909134
I dont eat meat anymore cause of things like this and we all drive cars so dont tell me that a water bottle is terrifying.. as for the comment about it being retribution, well arent you a lovely human.
So guys ditch the nastiness and get on with sharing the knowledge.
Let your better side shine through and dissapoint me cause I have come to see a lot of bad examples of humanity lately.
No doubt the "one who must be right will offer another retort on the dispicable actions of 0.8 mL( Yes I did measure it and no we dont need to use it anymore) of water because it is beneath him to apologise for the remark about the retribution.. thats my beef (if you pardon the pun on the meat eating thing)
So surprise me.
Incidentally the tone arm is ok and I will look at building a tonearm soon probably the air tonearm)

to any who have been offended......
I extend an apology.
Firstly (and not trying to defend any "cruel actions" of myself or any....): resorting to using vinegar and water is a last resort for me. I can't "shoo" them away or get to them quick enough to stop them. And I won't get rid of them, because they are part of the family. If I see them look like they want to mark, I try a stern verbal reprimand...not that they understand, but they do react to changes in tone in your voice. If I don't then I resort to use of a squirt bottle (not a Super Soaker).
As far as kittens go, the youngest one is 6 mos (we just got her), and was essentially "feral" . She is calming down, all I am trying to do is create a reasonable and healthy boundary.
As far as eating meat...well I do, but not daily. If you've never seen the inside of a working commercial slaughterhouse, it is very disturbing. I once made a living shovelling turkey heads...now that is pretty gross, and the methods used to slaughter them I think are simply inhumane. I've been in commercial beef and pork slaughterhouses and it is absolutely one of the grossest and inhumane treatment of any animal on the planet.
The sticky tape looks good and doable.dsavitsk ,thanks for the link.
back to turntables and tonearms and such:
wakibaki,, I agree that other media types are more pet friendly, and that is one of the reasons that I have digital equipment (and my wife can't be bothered with using a turntable, even though of her own accord she accepts that the big black discs sound better than the little silver-ish ones do). And up until recently, pets haven't been a problem.
duderduderini , well before ya give that a try, take a chance on the unipivots. simple as a hammer and good sounding as well, just use very good materials for the arm itself. I use salvaged arrow shafts from an archery range, 80 ksi, ultra light, rigid...
The air bearing types are quite interesting. I have the materials here to make one, but have been so impressed w/$2.19 tonearm that I've never bothered building one. Incidentally the $2.19 runs in the same league as my SME 309 magnesium tonearm 🙂, but for .1% of the price!

Really weird arc to this thread.
Still, if someone comes crying to the forum that their toys got broke, I guess it's fair to expect a certain lack of sympathy. That's the internet! Making fun of the misfortune of others since 1972 ... or whenever it was that 4chan got started ...
Meanwhile I came here hoping to see photos of cute kittens riding turntables .... and was sadly disappointed. Tch tch.
To the OP:
Dude, your tonearm and cart got busted ... just go buy another one for chrissake! Your AT cart is only Y13,095.
http://www.amazon.co.jp/オーディオテクニカ-ATN-150MLX-audio-technica-交換針/dp/B0008JID7U
Unbelievable. I really have no time for people who spend beyond their means on their gear and then freak out when something happens to it. Especially phono cartridges. Cartridges are disposable, no matter if it costs $40 or $4000. They wear out, and they are easily damaged. If it bothers you to replace it, you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.
And for the love of Pete, if you insist on keeping a menagerie in the house then properly secure the TT cover, and put a cage around the tube amp! Maybe then you wouldn't have to go around squirting defenseless kittens all the time.
