It's exactly my point. It is very unlikely that I was so blind and did not notice the screws if they were there before.
The screws seem to match the dash color. Smacks of dealer-installed-option. Or maybe the wife is buying you a christmas present: ScanGauge - Trip Computer + Digitial Gauges + ScanTools
You sure it's your car? Maybe you accidentally drove off from a parking lot in someone else's car (same model and color). Better go check the number plates...
The wife ... or somebody ... is getting you something. Don't talk about it to your friends and family, or if you already have, just drop it like you've forgotten about it.
Then, in a week or two (if it's xmas related), act surprised. Tell everyone how finding the screws made you crazy, but you never actually clued in that it might be linked to a gift.

Of course, you could just remove the screws and seal / repair the holes with a soldering iron.

but then the aliens might get annoyed.

Could your wife be installing an breathalizer ignition lock 🙂
Thanks God my wife found a better job.. She drove this car before. There was a rumor, when one her co-worker started suing the boss he hired private investigator to find something on all of them...
I have no proof though, just a rumor...
They are for the missing automatic vacuum cleaner that's supposed to keep grass from collecting on the floor mat.

How much do you ask using your own vacuum cleaner?
