Im looking into doing some of this DIY projection tv. Im in the market for a lcd panel right now but i cant really find any good ones around my budget ($120). The few that i have found are the Spectra C. The thing that im asking is how good of a lcd are they for the modified OHP in a box with Metal Halide light source. The few spectra C panels i have found on ebay i dont thing have any cables other then power. They have some 2 row 15 pin connector and like a 9 pin connector. What do i have to get to hook this up to some like TV-3000 thing.
Thanks in advance.
And if anyone has a panel that you are willing to sell for around $120 that would be good too.

hmm you would most likely need an lcd panel that can do atleast 1024x768 to fully use the detail of DVD. those still seem kinda expensive on ebay.
Note: 🙂 You can always get any lcd panel and watch dvd's though...
Best thing to do is to compare the types of panels and what they
offer... if you can find a panel that does 800x600 atleast. that would be great.
you'll be happy with a SVGA 800x600 panel. a VGA one will be fine for a while, but at some point you'll want to upgrade. DVD's are 720x480 so anything higher, while nice, is an added expense. I personally like my VGA only stuff but i'm only going to use it for another year or two. I've got a TVT-3000 that works great....it uses a computer input on it, and has the proper cords and remote control. No Ghosting on it at all

yes,
i had the following setup
- dukane 4003 php
- nview spectra C
- tv 3000 vga theatre
- screen made out of black out cloth
looked perfect for me
i had to make the vga cable and ps for the panel myself
but the instructions were found in this forum so it was not hard at all.
by the way if you need a cable from pc to nview spectra c panel
i sell them for $15.00 including shipping! handmade and tested on a working panel!

The nView Spectra C panel I have has the svideo and RCA inputs in addition to the standard VGA. I connect my DVD player to it using the RCA cable. Would the TV 3000 VGA theater box give better quality than my current setup?

eebasist,
i supose everybody has different taste AND opinions... because....... the setup i made with an spectra c (1993) a Dukane 4003 ohp, a TV-3000 and a screen made out of black out cloth swept me of my feet. the very first day after i had looked at excerpts of a movie (contact) and a concert (Sade) i drove in a hurry to Best-Buy to see what the difference was with the $4995 big screen tv's and the tv wall they have in their store..... to promote dish. i still cannot believe (allthough every visitor tells me so) that the result i have is magnificent and easily compareable with movietheatres (allthough i feel that most movietheatres in the US are not really that great in picture quality!!!)
I do not have any eye tiredness coming up after watching 2 movies in a row however i think that i am severely handicapped ecause the room were are using is only 16 ft so the projector isonly about 15 ft away from the screen and that results in a maximum screen dia of about 90" maybe if i put the set up in a larger room , things would look differently. but now even when i am standing almost next to the screen i see hardly any daze or irregularities or whatever.
serious.

big screen rear projection tv
frankly we are happy we did not go for the rear projection junk ...
now that we've gotten critical about poc quality, we were at best buy and were watching some show with mariah carey .... in close up her lipstick was red but you could not see where it started or ended, the red was all blurr some other colors like green the same thing they looked like they faded into the stage...
happy saving $2995 !
i think i have a much better picture quality than that crap!

I'm glad your quality is so great uvodee 🙂
you think you're limited in size though? because of the size of my wall, I am limited to a 72" diagonal. I am using an infocus powerview 950 with an elmo hp-l355 deluxe OHP. 2700 lumens....ech. It was cheap though, actually, $1, so I'm not really complaining too much. I am considering puting a metal halide bulb in it, but this will involve extensive research before I spend excessive amounts of money for it only NOT to work.

Re: big screen rear projection tv
i think it all depends on what your playing as compared to them the signal they get to the tv's from cable or whatever maynot be in HD format, alot of the tvs that sell around here are HD compatable which means that you still need a converter but once you have such a thing you get the high definition. with a spectra c you get 640 x 480 res and with a ntsc signal you get 640 x 480 interlaced which means each time it draws a line on the screen it'll skip everysecond line meaning you only see 320 x 240 and the HD's try to compensate as much as possible but they can't compensate 2 fold, when you watch DVD's at home you get a higher resolution and as long as your panel can put that out you'll notice twice the picture quality.
atleast thats the way i understand it

i believe you eye_com
there is also the issue of the plasma tv's you can't walk around at best buy anymore without seeing the plasma tv's i guess that is how what they are trying to push now , 42" is the max they are selling here so no word ofcourse about bigger screen, suddenly that does not seem to exist anymore hummmmm........
i have a question here though.... is plasma not just the same as tft? they sell small sharp tv's and they look exactly like lcd screen's with a separate tuner box

Re: hdtv
plasma is different im not quite sure but, hang on
http://www.howstuffworks.com/plasma-display1.htm
The basic idea of a plasma display is to illuminate tiny colored fluorescent lights to form an image. Each pixel is made up of three fluorescent lights -- a red light, a green light and a blue light. Just like a CRT television, the plasma display varies the intensities of the different lights to produce a full range of colors.
so basically 3 different colored florecent light multiply by the resolution.
an lcd needs a back light to inorder to light up
i know most plasma screens don't have a tuner as newer tv's are going to have a digital input. the input would come from a cable or satalite box often called a set top box. they do sell larger than 42" hd compatible tv's here i think the biggest i've seen is the hitatchi 52" widescreen, very nice, as for plasma screens i don't think i've ever even seen one so. . .

You will never see a 42" lcd becuse they are simply too costly to make. That is why larger tvs are plasma. Gateway makes a real nice 48" for $2999 and thats about the cheapest I've seen.
I also have a Spectra C, My total price was $99 off Ebay including shipping. Like I've been telling everyone it's the best $ 99 I've spent on my A/V system! If keep my screen size too 5' or under DVD looks great, larger and the screen door affect starts to get noticable, first time two of my friends saw it the said it looks better than some of their friends who have rear projections!
Eventually I will upgrade to get bigger/res. sreen size but happy for now.
Question to the people with the TV3000, how good does your spectra C look watching the tv tuner compared to rear projection TV's
